I have a 95 s14. It seems that when I am going speeds over 60mph smoke comes up through the shifter. What the hell could this be?

5 speed?A. Some fluid is hitting/in your exhaustB. Your cat is busted and burning up

Auto?

A. You are overheating your transmission

A. If fluid is hitting the exhaust at 60. Smoke would not casually come up through the center console.

B. Same thing goes for the cat. Winds at 60mph would not let smoke rise vertically.

AutoA. I agree with this.

If you have a manual transmission. You might be low on fluid. On the left side of the transmission (facing the back of the car) you will see the transmission fill nut. Loosen the nut gently, if fluid comes out, you are okay and tighten it back up. If it is low you need more. Fill the transmission through the shifter hole, not the fill valve. Once you see fluid start to pur out of the valve, tighten the nut. Also, there are electrical wires running through the console ie: cigarette lighter, E-brake sensor, power mirror (if applicable). Hopefully this provides some assistance.

Also, I forgot to add. Your car if it is the picture above, cannot be a 1995 S14 bodystyle. The car shown above has a bumper only available on the 1991 - 1994 S13 bodies.

my car has the same issue... when i was getting it aligned the guy let me go under my car and i had a good look around... on the passenger side of my transmition, there is a bolt that was leaking a tiny bit of transmission fluid... i could see that just below the bolt there was some semi fresh fluid.. anyway, with a hot transmission and something like that happeneing(dripping on the side of transmission) it will burn off and come up through the center console area....

btw i have '90 5 speed

curious...why fill the transmission through the shifter and not the fill plug, it all goes to the same place right?

hey everyone, this was my buddy using my i.d. to post. The first diagnosis of the problem was an exhaust leak (there were very obvious holes in the exhaust and it looked about where the smoke was coming from) So he got a new 2.5in piping with borla muffler. Apparently it only smoked one more time and has yet to start smoking again. I told him I thought it was whatever junk that was in the new exhaust burning up.

On a side note the exhaust sounds badass and he definitely picked up a few ponies (those s14's can be dogs in the high end- seems to have improved that area of hsi powerband)

i've had this happen to me also, but it's only ocurred in two seperate instances and i have yet to find out what the problem is. scared the living **** out of me on the freeway since i had no idea why there were little whisps of smoke coming through the console. i pulled off the road and let the car sit for a few minutes. has yet to happen again, then again, i have yet to turn off my cabin air fans again hah.

when i went for an oil change, i had them check the transmission fluid as well. i was told that it's started to degrade and break down. is that a possibility considering my fluid level is not low?

I have the same problem w/my 98' 240. It usualy only happpens when I drive down the highway or get on the throttle in 3rd or 4th. Just driving in high rpms mostly does it.

Whats the deal? It really bugs me and it smells a bit. Is there a way to fix this? Im going to look for leaks and maybe change the trans. fluid.

only happened to me twice on the freeway, but i had my cabin air off. i guess the fans disperse the whisps of smoke so i don't notice them. but in my case, it didn't smell when this happened. any suggestions?

kinda weird, have you guys ever removed your "shifter cover center console thingie?"

then you can see if you have that one main rubber boot and the rubber boot under it that seals the shifter from the transmission

either way thats really the only way smoke from under your car can get in in that area

and i was looking through my FAST and im pretty sure both parts are available from nissan
