Havng major problems gettng smoged in Cali.Replaced CAT, O2 sensor, plugs, Dist Cap and rotor, had throttle body cleaned, replaced air boot to intake and had injectors flushed.

Runs clean as a whistle at 2500 RPM fails at idle. all the test results are the same befor and after all this work was done.

Car runs really good... just can't pass smog! Any ideas?

Maybe something to do with your timing at idle?

It would be easier to diagnose if you posted your results. And the test should be at 15 and 25 mph now...

maybe its yoru cat converter. did u let the car idle for like 2 hours or just so its at normal operation temps. it maybe a no brainer but not alot of peeps know u need yoru engine to be at normal operation temps. say, at least to have the radiator fan come on at least once is the best indication.

That wouldn't explain why he fails at idle and not higher RPM's. And it's actually better to drive around really hard right before you smog it. Get the cat nice and hot...

Car was good and hot before test. here is the intersting thing...the car is testing the SAME after all the work was done as before any of the work was done...so everything I did so far has accomplished nothing. Is there more than one O2 sensor? I only replaced the one near the exhaust maniflod. The car burns no oil, does not smoke, There is not a ton of power, but I am used to driving a big German V-8... But it seems to run pretty strong... did I miss anything?

if its a 95 or newer, there is a second 02 sensor which is before the cat under the car, but on 95's it was only used as a diagnostic tool, while post 95 it was used for the ecu, i believe.

pay the guy like a hundy and get it over with on the hook up u know. check also the TPS. no check engine is coming on???

also check the timing of course maybe u can just advance the timing like 5 degrees. u did say u got a FULL tune up right??

just had another thought. couldnt there be somthing wrong with fuel pressure being too much. just a thought considering that not all the fuel is being burned by the HC being too much and all

If you have an S13, check your air induction valve(AIV). This system is designed to reduce HC and CO emissions. It sounds more like the solenoid is not activating under idle conditions. But then it could also be a leaking vacuum line to the valve or a clogged valve. You'll need to get a hold of an FSM to go through the troubleshooting procedures.

You can give him a Hundy or a Hyundai...they cost about the same. It's your choice.
