I am thinking of switching to an SR20de, I live in california and i'm probably sure that it is illegal to have an sr20 on the streets. Is there any way to have it street legal? Or have it Past smog?

ok, if its only an sr20de, you could probably get away with it, (but not an sr20det, and this is assuming you live in cali, other states apparently are much easier on restrictions) since sentra se-r's came with an sr20de, if you got all the smog equipment from one of those, and then hooked all that shxt up to a jdm rear drive sr20de, you may yet succeed, also assuming that you can show a ref that the engine and all associated parts are from a model year either the same year or newer than the car they're in.

All illegal in CA unless you're getting the same motor for the same chassis, but the motor must be of same year or newer if I'm not mistaken. Also the CA models have California emissions stuff. When you go to your BAR ref to have it deemed legal and to get a new VIN, they might poke around for those as well. Good luck if you're gonna try to pass off anything else other than a KA in a 240 in CA if the pigs in your area have the notorious "book of engine bay pictures"

False, as long as you're getting the same make of engine and/or newer than your year then it's legal that's why I'd like a VG30DETT in mine, I just don't have the money

Some how I have doubts of the legalities of a VG30 in an s13. I will be giving the BAR a call in the morning. If you're curious about it, I suggest you do the same.

Regardless, I'd say it's safe to assume an SR20DE is NOT legal in CA until I hear otherwise from the BAR directly instead of this online hear-say.

it also has to pass emissions. so maybe u can custom make an exhaust with a whole bunch of catalytic convertors lined up 1 after another and it might pass the sniffer.

either way no one would go through all the trouble to swap in a vg30 just for 300hpand even if it could pass most would atleast ecu tune it. and some bolt ons making it pretty impossible to pass.

a vg30dett in a z32 is actually nicer to me in my opinion than in a s13. the body is heavier but its wider.

Answers I got today: No across the board for any SR or VG in s13. Good luck with getting a legal swap if you're planning either.

I actually have no motor in my car right now. Ha ha ha. It's because I'm rebuilding my SR. Don't ask how I get past smog...
