I have been noticing that everytime I ride my clutch(i.e.- pulling into my garage) there is a really awful smell coming from the clutch area under the car. It doesnt do it unless I ride the clutch for a while. The smell reminds me of an animal that has been dead for a long time. The first time I thought it may have been a dead animal but it has been doing it for a couple of months now. The clutch has 130k on it, but it seems to be fine. Has anyone had this problem or know what it could be. It may not even be the clutch, but what ever it is it smells like s***. Thanks

Holy crap people! Most clutches need to be changed out well before the 100K mark and the 240 clutch is NOT designed for exessive dragging. You are overheating the disc media, the pressure plate and the flywheel.

Change those clutches and stop dragging. Or drag less. Even a new clutch will smell like that when you abuse it.

ahh, that's y there's ~500 mile break-in period of city-style driving on new clutches (racing clutches differ)

ya, i'm amazed that u guys are up there on the mileage w/out any noticeable slippage in 5th gear...

PS: it's not that much fun replacing the clutch w/out some power tools to take off the flywheel to get a resurface job on it... while on your back by yourself... which is taking me forever to get it done.

That brings up another point. It is OK to air-wratchet off the flywheel bolts if you are careful, but NEVER install a nut or bolt using an air-wratchet. You may think the torque it is applying is correct but it is not. Always hand wrench back on and use a decent torque wrench for final tightening. My 240 had 4 stripped and one crossthreaded suspension bolt from the previous air-wratchet moron. May he suffer the pain of a thousand paper-cuts.

That is the last thing I wanted to hear. My clutch doesnt slip, or anything. It just has that smell occassionally. It seems to be perfect. I take it to the track at least once a month and it hasnt even acted like it is weak. Is it "easy" to change out clutches. My friend has a lift, and one of those things that hold the transmission up. So I may change my clutch in his shop.

lift= 10x easier, shop w/ air impact tools= more easier, a friend who already knows how to do it help u learn=priceless...

reds, if it ain't broke, don't fix it yet... just save up on a clutch kit, new rear main seal, the spl clutch pivot ball, stainless steel clutch hose, bypasss damper, etc

ya, i can't friggin break the flywheel bolts loose so i can get into changing out the rear main seal/pilot bushing while i'm in there... gah! will haveta goto lowes/home depot & get some "cheater bars" to finally get it off (it will be it's 1st time on the resurface machine).

Ubernoober, yea i never trust air impacts on torquing to correct specs; y i have 2 torque wrenches in my arsenal...

for example, if i feel lazy to rotate the tires myself, i would bring my deep socket & torque wrench w/ me to the shop.

when the pepboys are done, I'd goto the parking lot to break em loose, then retorque them to the correct spec.
