Once my Q has the AC going for a minute or two, there is no scent at all, however...When I first turn on the air, an old, kinda musty odor comes through. Not good when you've got a friend riding shotgun. Actually, not good for me when I drive by myself either.

I know it's the middle of November so a lot of you may be asking why the hell is this dude asking about AC?

What is the best way to try and remedy this smelly air?

There are a couple of posts (one by Elwesso) about accessing the evaportor coils. They and the closet can be cleaned this way and that is best.

There is also a product by BG called FrigiClean.

Be sure your evaporator closet drain is working freely, as well as your sunroof drains.

Hi There:

Had the same thing on my 98. Smells like feet for the first 15 secs -- not very pleasant. Especially during a rainstorm.

I pulled out the cabin air filters and they were literally black. I had to order a set becasue my dealer did not have them in stock and they were not stocked (or available) at my local parts stores, but in the meantime, I carefully soaked and cleaned the filters with a toothbrush and degreaser, rinsed/dried them with compressed air (carefully!!) and reinstalled them until I received the filters the following week.

I also bought a can of Ozinga (sp?) air sanitizer from Advanced Auto. It helped clean the bacteria living in the HVAC tubing and evaporator as well. Just spray a steady stream into the intake vents near the edge of the hood and inside each vent and let it circulate. Now, no more smell and I'm sure the air is safer to breathe without all those pathogens.

Hope that helps you cure the funk!!

Not to thread jack but could anyone tell me where the cabin filter is?. I took apart the center console and the dash and I didn't find it.

The cabin air filter on the FGY33 requires the glovebox to be removed, correct?

Yes, and the FSM is very explicit. There are also about 3 threads in the previous posts. Just be careful with the modiesty panel connector. Don't force it.

The part number is both filters. Buy a couple from Joe (along with the M1 filter he sells so cheaply) along with a couple of the air filters and change each annually.

I had super success with the Castle duct cleaner. No more smell!
