Well I know with my Maxima, I get a gas smell during the colder months due to some dry rotted fuel line.

As it gets colder out the hoses get hard and hairline cracks let gas vapor leak. Its not enough to actually leak gas but leaves a strong gas smell.

Have you just noticed it recently?

Since your located in NY, I know its gotta be getting cold there now, so I'd say that would probably be your problem.

In my 98 Maxima, I changed my fuel filter and that stopped it

On the 95 Maxima, I just went away after it warmed up

Thank you very much for posting this. I have a 2005 Maxima and it is doing the exact same thing. The "vapor leak" response makes sense, since there is no visible gas leak on the ground.

But still, this is really bad (and possibly not very good for my health). Is there anything I can do about it, or do I need to take it to a mechanic? I don't have many auto tools, but my father in law has a pretty complete shop. My DIY skills are more geared towards speakerbuilding/woodworking and computers, but I am capable doing minor repairs and maintenance with my cars.

Thanks for any and all help!

Well if it truely is just a vapor leak, it will be HARD to find the exact hose to replace.

But just pop your hood and look over your fuel line for any that look a bit worn.

Worst case scenario...replace all of them in your engine bay.

It may take a little time, but fuel line is cheap and the smell will be gone!!!
