After driving my car, getting out momentarily, and returning to my car, I smell gas inside. My car seems to be getting slightly worse gas mileage also. I searched, and it seems like the obvious thing is my O2 sensor, but everything I read, said that if that was the case, then my exhaust would smell like gas. It doesn't. The inside of my car does. I've had my heat on... so I'm sure that's how the smell is getting in. But why would the smell be there anyway??

Possibly the gasket on the fuel pump 'door'

When I replaced the fuel pump in my 240 it wasn't sealing correctly, smelt like fuel pretty bad.

u ruled out that there r no external fuel injector / fuel hose @ the filter-metal line leaks?

when i had external leaks @ 2 of my injectors it would smell like that...

no i haven't ruled that out. I'll have to check on that. Just for the record though, I haven't smelled it since I posted. Is it possible I may have just had some low quality gas?

I had the same problem but i replaced my gasket on the fuel door and it solved the problem but you may also have a leak somewhere in the engine bay and that is why the smell might be comming in throught the heat so you should run you engine and use your nose cuz it is the best idea good luck

Might want to check the top and bottem fuel hoses on the filter...sometimes the rubber inside the hoses tend to crack, and leak fuel no matter how tight u tighten the clamps..happened to me

Leaky fuel injectors and/or O-rings. I had the same thing on my 89 a while back. Gas smell inside the car at all times.

Start with replacing the O-rings and if that doesn't fix it, you need to replace your injectors.

Start your car, pop the bonnet and watch the injectors as well as the fuel filter lines. Gas evaporates fairly quickly, so it's best to just observe everything in action and use your nose to detect leaks you can't see. Even if the o-seals on the injectors were bad, you'd get fuel pissing up around the middle section due to fuel pressure and a tight area around the injector. If you can, access the fuel pump area without removing the fuel pump (duh...). If you smell gas there, it's the expandable rubber seal that's gone bad. If you don't smell anything, it's not the seal.

Summary- No external leaks, no smell of gas around the fuel pump access, your injectors may be dumping fuel unmonitored, hence the crappy gas mileage.

I'm assuming you're running stock injectors without external fuel management and with stock fuel pressure regulator. If this isn't the case, then you've got fuel management issues and probably a lot more that needs to be addressed.

while driving, do you smell it when you open your window or sunroof?
