Hi. I had the same exact issue about 6 months ago. Took it to a shop... they wanted to take apart the entire engine!! Told me not to drive it because it could catch fire and with small children in the car, things could get ugly quick. Told me that it would be several hundred dollars to fix and may end up being around...hummmm... a thousand or so.... I made an apt to fix it, because of the thought of a car fire is a bad thing. OH.. and by the way... it was after a 10 minute look under the hood with the engine OFF.
In a panic I went home, call my brother who stopped by within 2 minutes with the engine RUNNING and in PARK, he located a very small pin hole leak in one of the upper fuel lines (it was mid-center back part of the engine) -- very close to the air vents on the dash. I went to the local Auto Zone store, purchased 1 foot of fuel hose for $1.50. Went home, took off the two screws on the O-Rings on each of the fuel links. Replaced the old line with the new hose and the smell was gone!! Needless to say... I canx my apt, fixed the issue and saved TONS of money (and our lives, too) !! The replacement job took less than 15 minutes!!!
