When every I drive my car and turn on the defroster, I noticed the slight smell of gas or something is burning...kinda like oil. It sucks because I have someone riding with me and say "umm....what the hell is that smell?"

is it just the defroster? or can it be on anything w/ the fan on??? i had a gas smell when i turn on the blower...found out that 2 fuel injectors sprung a leak.

I also have an exhaust manifold leak since 1 or 2 bolt heads are missing...

It only comes when I turn on the defroster and sometimes the heater. So I guess I have to replace the o-rings in my injectors...right? Because I plan to do that either way since I'm running rich.......just have to wait for the weather to get alittle better.

When you put on your defroster it brings in "fresh" air from outside, rather than circulating the cab air. This means that it is basically pulling air from under your hood. Try turning on the fan and make the air blow out the front vents. Then turn off the re-circulate switch so that your pullin fresh air. If you smell it, then it has nothing to do with your defroster.. It means that you have a fuel or exaust leak under your hood and its gettin sucked into the cab when you need fresh air....Probably just a manifold leak.. If it was a gas leak, you would probably notice the smell from outside your car.

1) The passenger compartment intake vents are under the wipers, which is a good place to pick up smells if you have leaks under the hood. And of course, the defroster vents blow air close to your nose.

2) Injector o-rings fit around the outside of the injector inlet, and seal it to the fuel rail. They have nothing to do with running rich. Now, an injector with a leaky nozzle might do it. And so might a bad oxygen (O2) sensor, or a million other things. But not o-rings.

yea, i had external fuel injector leaks on 2 of the injectors... also noticed by fuel baked-on stains on the intake manifold... I have a '89 SOHC model, so I just bought aftermarket replacements & not just the o-rings...

check fuel clamps/hoses while you're down there to find the leak 1st...

i had a strong gas smell for a while, turns out i had 3 leaky injectors, which cost me 950CAD (625+/- USD), and that fixed it again. now a weld on my exhaust broke and it ends right after where the cat used to be, so theres a little smell there now, but im fixing that this weekend
