Smell fumes when start car!

Evrytime I start my car I smell fumes. I drive a 1992 240sx SE with 176k any ideas why thats happening?

sound just like my gf car and she couldn't figure out what it was so she took it to the dealer. there is a code that does NOT set of the CEL it came out to be the purge control valve was stuck...it next to the knock sensor. helps something with the charcoal canister... i don't really know what it does but i have a 95 so i can pass emissions and don't care

it's not fuel it's something else but smells everytime time i start it

Mine smells like exhaust gases when idling and while driving so I have the same problem. Actually, it doesn't seem to change how the engine performs so I don't really care about the exhaust gas smell, I just wondered why I can smell it in the cabin while driving too, but no smell with the windows closed

what you are describing is exactly what my gf was saying. you cant really smell it out side of the car or with the windows closed. her car seams to come and go with the smell.

I just started to smell gas in my car a couple days ago... I just replaced the gas cap about a week ago. Noticed yesterday that it was extremely bad... also got really hot here. Checked my records and replaced the fuel filter since it was time for that. All the fuel lines are intact. I am gonna replace the EVAP canister and purge valve next but I can't find one on a Sunday. I was supposed to leave to go camping with my GF today :-(
