scenario: i have the smartkey in my pocket, i started the car but then i had to get out of the car also removing the key. while the car is still on, my wife gets into the car (w/o the smartkey) and proceeds to drive it. I thought the car would be inoperable w/o the key inside????

not true. anyone can drive your car as long as it's been already started. however, if someone drives it away, turns off the car, they won't be able to turn it back on. so, if you're at a gas station and want to pop in for some cigs and want to leave the engine running, make sure you lock your doors.
