Smart Balance wants to make itself the only legal form of "butter"

Its good stuff. I bought some and while it isn't as rich and full as butter (making it inferior on toast and bagels), its good enough to use as a regular alternative for pan frying eggs and egg whites.

Then, I saw one of their advertisements tonight proclaiming the greatness of Denmark's ban on trans fats. I was amazed that a company would go as far as advocating a fully enforced, legal ban of its full-fat competitors.

I sent them a note:Quote »I bought your product recently to use for cooking. Its great, as good as advertised, except your new ads advocate the banning of trans fats.

Thankfully, I don't live in Denmark. In a free society, we have the option of CHOOSING what products we prefer. We have the option of deciding for ourselves, as responsible individuals, whether to purchase butter, margarine, or vegetable oil spread.

I don't need the government coddling me from cradle to grave like a lemming in fear of the supermarket.

Thankfully, I kept my receipt and I'll be returning your product if the store will take it, otherwise I will throw it away and buy another brand. There are several other butter-flavored spreads without trans-fats to choose from. That's the beauty of a free society -- I can choose something else.

I don't think that is even possible for a company to acquire a ban from a government to stop it's competitors.

There are some many red flags that can be raised, starting in the area of Anti-Trust Law.

Just my 2 cents.

There are some many red flags that can be raised, starting in the area of Anti-Trust Law.

Just my 2 cents.

Its entirely possible. They don't explicitly ban competitors. Instead, they ban a particular ingredient or specific content. This artificially restricts the market, removes substitution goods from the market, and increases their share. Then, they run ads claiming to be the good guys.

Its a US manufacturer trying to make it a US problem. Would you buy an XBox if you found out Microsoft was trying to ban non-console gaming? Would you buy Kraft cheese if you found out Kraft wanted to ban any varieties of cheese that they didn't manufacturer?

Its pretty damn unethical, and they have the gall to be proud of it.

It's wierd, but antitrust law in the U.S. generally allows you to try to game the regulatory system in a way that just happens to give your product a competative advantage.
