How do i go about getting my 96 Q to run at its full capacity. The car has 98,00 miles but always feels like its being held back. What things can i do to add more power? It's been serviced recently but there always seems to be a slight hesitation upon acceleratiion. Thanks in advance for any help.

What's your maintenance history like? Are you the original owner?

i am not the original owner but it has been serviced since i bought the car. The car has pretty much only been to the dealer for any kind of maintainence. The last tune up was around 70,000 miles.

Check the ignition advance with a timing light, by now a bit of chain stretch which could have advance less than 15 degrees.BG44k to clean injectors and valves.

Restoring to OEM as new specifications is the first step.

Not much more you can do without spending the big bucks to reengineer the engine transmission.

Upgrading the ECU and changing out the differential seem to be two of the more popular ways of increasing performance. Scan the posts here and on Infiniti Online Mechanic and you'll see many others members looking to do the same. I agree with all the posts that you've got to get the car up to OEM first before looking for more. I'm getting close but it didn't happen overnight.

I posted a thread below on improving throttle performance. Enjoy the ride.

1996 is OBD II and no VVT, so no upgrade path for the ECM.

The 96 cams are less than performance grind [since no VVT] they had to split the difference for smooth idle and accept less torque and HP........which they neglected to publish.

They barely met the numbers [-5%?] but the 90-95 exceeded the torque numbers.

A 96 is only a few tenths slower [60 and quarter mile] than a 95. Stiil runs 90 mph in quarter.

Almost a second and a half faster than J30 and faster than a 1996 BMW 740il.

*Right probably a mistype in above as 95 and 94 were identical

"From seat of the pants impressions, the 96 Q feels stronger and torquier but is slightly louder and not as smooth as the 2000. The VH45DE does feel smooth but is a bit coarser than we expected. The newer Q's VH engine is buttery smooth and quiet but doesn't quite have the thrust of the VH45DE. On the freeway the differences are negligible until you stab the accelerator."

I'd love to see some 60 mph to 100 mph comparisons. These G50s, regardless of year, are QUICK at cruising speed.

1.) None.

2.) Depends on how much you want to spend.

You could always do exhaust, which wont be good for any worthwhile power, but it'll be loud. The upgrades you should consider are brakes and suspension.

Amen. Start with new rubber, shocks, upper links, rear a bar.

Don't forget the popcharger. That'll make it sound faster too.

Nah, I've been reading the forum for a couple years and drooling over some of the stuff everyone else can do, including Robert's sweet ECU. But the 96 is a dead end - virtually nothing you can do to make it faster, other than radical stuff like a 4.08 differential.

Keep it and love it, or swap it for a 94-95 before you sink any more money into it. The positive side is that it's probably the most reliable and durable of all G50s.

I have the stillen air intake and i didn't feel much difference in performance. How much difference does the 4.08 differential swap make.

do a search under my posts about the 4.08 and my 1/4 mile results. It does not affect your 1/4 ET's at all...but does make you quicker from 0 to 78mph...then slower from 78 to 92mph.

Nothing is cheap about the Q to begin with and then if you want preformance parts....you are really in for a hurting to your pocket book. The 4.08 will set you back at least $1,300.

Actually, with OBD II and no intake camshaft advance, it would be my ideal candidate for proceeding with the supercharger project.

From slowest to fastest G50, instantly.

All it takes is bucks.

Heheh, yeah I want that supercharger. Always about the money ... sigh. Maybe I can talk someone else into it and live vicariously. I really wanted that Geoff Brabham car and had thoughts of doing the supercharger project on it. That would have been worth it with that heritage it had and those low low low miles.

Ah well, ... shoulda bought it ... but I didn't.

This one has 174,000 now, and it'll need a transmission one day soonish. I'll need that transmission more than I'll need the supercharger.

Anyone want to give it the Supercharger Project a try? Wes said $3500 to start?

That's because it reduces performance. Return to OEM intake and filter.

And read the previous posts, including all by Q45tech, before spending money on non OEM parts.

THANKS, i DIDN'T BELIEVE THE STILLEN INTAKE WOULD DECREASE PERFORMANCE. I THOUGHT IT WOULD IMPROVE IT. I WILL RETURN TO THE OEM FILTER AND INTAKE. YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERDAY.
