Well, just waiting for time in my ex-biz partner's shop ... possibly next week. Meanwhile, got the pistons (CP 9:1). Going to Swain for coating. Here's a pic of the CP's with Pauter's:



I also mounted the intercooler and piping. notice how you can't see the piping from the front? It runs behind the lower lip ... I'm adding some aftermarket driving lamps :) (can't stand the OEM style). Here's a pic:



Also moved the battery to the trunk using Taylor's aluminum box.



Anyway, that's the short update :)

Wheels are 3-piece OZ (not sure of type - they are out of production); bought 'em used from a friend but basically brand spankin' new. Fronts 17x8, rears 17x10. Tires are Ventus HRII fronts, 235/40R17; rears are Yokohama Avid H4 255/40R17. Don't even ask about the offsets. I had to use H&R 1/4" spacers in the rear and custom make some hubcentric 1/2" spacers for the front due to my having the Tein coilovers and my friend had stock. Did the front spacers on a buddy's lathe using some scrap material ... sure beats H&R's $100 ones! Besides, H&R was on backorder for about 3 months. I was determined to make these work (HA!). I appreciate the compliments ... aw hell, isn't that why we post our stuff here?! ;)

... and look what happens when you get bored yet inspired! While I was doing the battery relocate, a friend of mine stopped by with his '99 VW Golf VR6. Turns out, he just bought an intake kit and had his stock piping with him ... kharma? Karman Ghia?? (sp?). Well, now I have a little bit of German engineering in my 240 ... notice the intake ... it's the pipe that leads into the TB of the VR6! Just had to cut the flexible end off and plug the hole underneath. Eh, it'll do until next week. :D Engine has a nice growl to it.

I kinda get a stiff rod too ... hopefully my rod won't bend causing me to piston everything ;)

Well, decided not to send the pistons to Swain for coatings. I'm fearful that what happened in the past will repeat itself (more below). For those of you unfamiliar with ceramic coatings or dry-film lub's here is a brief tutorial:

Coating the piston tops with Swain's GoldCoat keeps the combustion heat in the chamber instead of absorbing down into the piston. This reduces the chances of piston melting in high horsepower engines prone to sudden bursts of heat (ie turbo, N2O ...). More heat in the chamber means more power ... also means cooler oil temps.

Coating the piston skirts with Poly Molyä, a tungsten-molybdenum disulfide polymer matrix (aka dry film lubricant) assists in creating less friction betweent the piston and cylinder walls.

I had done this with a set of Wiseco pistons for a drag car a couple years ago. Worked awesome for a short time until we noticed some cylinder wall scuffing. Long story short, our experience was a result of the coatings not allowing the piston material (aluminum) to expand and contract properly within the piston manufacturer's specifications. That being said, my reasons for not doing these CP pistons this way are simple ... I'm not building a full time WC or NDRA engine. The engine will not be subjected to the kind of ongoing abuse such as extremely long durations of spuratic high revving nor the types of high HP to which these coatings would have a dramatic effect. It comes down to cost effectiveness for me, thus the decision not to do it this time around.

Sheesh, you should have been here this morning when I was trying to decide on breakfast ... hmm, Fruity Pebbles with milk or dry Cookie Crisp ... decisions.

PS - Cometic head gasket to be here Tuesday ... cool.

So even with the moly skirt coating this happened? I was considering this down the road. Couldn't you adjust the manufactuer's specs on the clearance to prevent this? Would the top coat cause this by itself? or do you think it was the skirt coating responsible....or a combo of the two?

When I looked over the pistons the scuffing appeared to be a result of the top coatings, not the poly. The marks were on the outer edges of the very tops of the skirts. I don't know if the tolerances could have been adjusted ... I assume you mean have the pistons custom built with that adjustment.

Yes, I meant the pistons. I guess that with the top and side coats, you can have the pistons made with tighter tolerances due to much less heat and therefore less expansion...that makes sense, right?

Lets talk about detonation rings! For you who don’t know what they are they are three rings that go around the ring landing of a good turbo piston! The rings allow gas to stay around the upper ring helping to fight detonation!

Nobody like's detonation rings? this would be my first mod to a turbo piston JE uses them on some of their pistons.

Hey everyone, I'm sorry I haven't been around ... my work schedule has been absolutely demanding as of late which forced me to put the car on temporary hiatus. Anyway, I'm back on it and just waiting for the pistons to come back from my machine shop. I'm having valve reliefs cut into them due to the higher lift of the cams. Hopefully between my work schedule and my friend's shop hours I can get this thing running by the end of next week. Good thing I have an extra car ... 91 Saturn sedan @ $800 ... Hey, it runs and it's got cold air ... holy crap I miss my 240. :(

i've been wondering where u have been. seems like u been keeping up with ur 240 as much as possible. and dont worry about the beater thing. i've got a 91 celica with a huge dent in the quater panel and a pepboys civic muffer all for $700. did i mention no hubcaps? its got factory aftermarket 13's
