You are a really busy man with the kids----paying for school and repoing cars, etc. They will love you for it as they get older and are able to appreciate the sacrifices. Well done!

Tampa,He drove the car to my house and I drove him back to his girl friends house. It was the last straw. He did not pay me anything for August OR September. I co-signed the loan and make the payments AND his insurance payments.Did not want to take the chance on him screwing up my credit. So, he's in debt to me now for $2,400 in partial payments/non-payments.I've paid more on the car than he has! Not sure what I'm going to do with the car. I let my 15 yr old drive it tonight and he seems to like it.....would be nice to have a truck in the driveway again....4x4 would be handy with winter coming, until a year ago, I always had a 4x4 here. We'll see. Amazing how a couple of steaks and several beers will calm you down.

Rich,

You did the right think. I only can imagine how hard to do this. I lift my hat up. He is probably not too happy right now but as I said you did the right thing. Just remember these days to be a kid, youth a lot harder then it used to be. They are exposed to a lot more then we used to be. Also saidly our generation did not do a good job to make them aware of the value of the money. How hard to get it,etc. What they see from everywhere is people buying this and that all on credits. Then it comes to the real world the payback. Obviously you try to teach him for this. He'll probably get it just a bit slower. Hope anyways.

I try to teach my son for this too. He is only 13 and he's got his bank account since age 10. He is managing his own money. I stepped in once and sit down with him. He likes video games. ( who in his age doesn't). He had that time like 200+ in his account. He's like I buy this and that game and maybe that too. I like Noooooooo. ok it is time to talk. That was maybe 2 years ago. Since that he is only spending his money wisely. His bank account is growing for a few months and he is spending some then he saves again. He's got to the habit to save the money first then spend.

Right now I could not be happier with him. I do online banking and He is always there with me to see how much money we have and where we spend it how we save. He said that few months back. Dad maybe I should have a retirement plan too. When he saw my retirement money. hahahahah But he is ony 13 and just going to get harder from now on. Hope he stays on the right track.

I know you are an amazing father, try not to lose your cool. Although it is really hard to fight with your emition.

Have a cold one on me.

Jacko, my son was avoiding me because he didn't want to pay me for what ever reasons he had. Much stress between us. Hopefully now with the car gone, the stress will go as well. He is my step-son, but I've raised him since he was 5, so he is mine. However, he does have some traits that are similiar to his other father that are unmistakeable....I do get along fine with his other father. Actually, I let him drive my Cobra several years ago and he ended up getting one!! And, he is a pontiac/GM guy!!

zozo, I read that and imagined that you are raising a little Telcoman!!!

You are very wise to show him the value of a dollar now! When they hit 15 they REALLY start thinking about a car and start to save.If you can get him to think about it now, you will be doing good!!!Yes, and I had several for you earlier my friend!

You are a great dad. Just wait until he starts his own family, and he will come back apologizing and thanking you for being a great dad to him. You are teaching him a lessn of a life time which he will value for a long time to come.

Right now I am at the phase when not sure what the spending money should be for him.

But for sure he asked me before the summer if he can go and work part time somewhere. I told him for sure not but he can help me. He did help me tru all summer with the renovation. 2 weeks before the school started I sat down with him and thanked him for his great help. Some days I saw him he really did not want to do it. I made sure I told him I was aware of it and I really appriciate he did not give up on those days.

We went to the bank and I told him whatever you have in your bank account I double it. He dropped his jaw then he asked if he can put his cash before that. hahahah Smart. We also ended up buying him a game what he wanted to buy just did not want to spend the money on it.

I was the best dad again

Not sure how we will end up with the car. He is going to high school next year and the high school is like 2 minutes walking from my house. If he needs a car probably can use one of ours for the first year or 2 than see how it goes. But I have been thinking about it awhile. Maybe I should sit down with my dfamily and think it thru all together.

Sorry to hear Rich. Good to teach responsibility, no matter the age.

That's a shame SVT. You mentioned the 240sx one time, I recall I had debated buying one.

The kid does need to grow up, he'll eventually learn responsibility when he "pays cash" to purchase his "first" car, will teach him responsibilty as it did me. I'm his age, and 5 years ago I was probably much worse than him.

Good luck with the... and keep him cool with you, explain the whole thing to him and it's all good

Everybody is younger then Telcoman.

No matter how fast I drive, Old age still catches Me!

Taking the car away from Your Son is hard on Both of You,but things will get better. He will learn to appreciate things more, when He has to earn them Himself!

What is really funny is how this sense of money skips from one kid to another in the family!

I am the oldest of 3... I have two younger sisters! one is 17 and the other 15....

Alexis the one that is 17 is a really good kid and works but she has no sense of money! I have a joint checking with her to show her how to manage her money!

But she is a good kid and I have been letting her drive my Jeep to school! So now I have tought her how to check the oil and fluids in the jeep as they should be done once a week! I want to teach her the responsibility and then I am going to help her find a car (I will pay half!) Over the summer she has saved over $1,000.00 so i figure I can get my jeep back and she gets a car that is better on gas! lol

Gabby on the other hand is very smart and understands the value of a dollar! But she just don't give a Damn about anything else! She would take my jeep and take it off roading or pile like 10 of her best friends into it and go joy riding if I let her!

But kids will be kids!

Telco, you're our resident old fart! It's a very distinguished title that has a lot of perks.
