Im asking for a buddy. He has an 88' pathfinder SE and the engine is cranking really slow. He just change the timing belt, tensioner, cam seals and the other belts. When we pulled out the old timing belt, it was cover in oil and some of the teeth came off. Need some help diag. the problem.

I'd start by trying a jump start from a known good battery.

How does it run once it starts?

It not the battery. What i mean by slow cranking is that you can see all the belts moving slowly. It look like it just as fast as moving the all the belts by hand.

So it doesn't start?

I'm guessing the timing belt slipped a few teeth and there's internal damage from the valves hitting the pistons.

Stop!
Use a ratchet on the main drive bolts at the dampener.
Turn the engine in the right way and feel for resistance.
Timing sounds off, check static timing
Feel for interference with a piston
How much slack opposite side of timing belt when top side is taught during movement
