I have looked and searched and found some good info on the use of MSD 6al's on the s14 cars. Recently (about 3-6 months ago), JWT updated their site with a very helpful write up on how to not only install one, but how to convert the distributor over to an external trigger. I was pleased to see JWT actually doing good things with their site, and want to try this. MSD 6al ignitions, or any msd box for that matter, are like miracle boxes. They make good improvements on top end, better gas mileage, and boosted cars will see the most gain from these. Since thats where i fall into category, im going to give this a shot.

It looks pertty simple. You open the cap, move the rotor from out of the way of 3 little contacts. You file the cloesest one to the center of the dist down, and solder a wire to it, and run it (under the rotation on the rotor) to the outside of the dist cap via a small cut you make. Viola--an external trigger wire used to trigger an msd ignition.

Of course this mod has been around for a while, and there have been a few writeups on it here and on other forums, so if this is a repost, im sorry about that.I am just curious to see if anyone has actually done this.Of course I know chris may has done it, but "he" didnt do it, he had a shop to do it. So im really looking for someone whos gone throuhg it themselves or at least has had experience with one, seen one, riden in a car with one--something like that.

Anyone have any good things or bad things to say about them?Also---Anyone know much about the HKS twin power other than its ungodly expensive?

Thanks,

Josh

I installed msd 6al sci on my s14. It is pretty simple to do and MSD makes good products. I haven't had any trouble with it at all.

I don't know much about the HKS twinpower other than the discription on the site. I think there was a thread in here about it though.

I just got done installing my MSD BTM, basiclly the same thing you'll do when installing the 6AL. The contact to cut can be a pain, and you have to be sure what side of the contact you solder the wire to. Also, the exterior wiring is a PITA, I'll have all the info on my site as soon as its up and running.

Yes---i saw the correct side should be the one most sunken in to the distributor from the pics on JWT's site.Also--the wiring DOES look like a total biacth to do...

any gains form an msd to be expected that would make it worth it?Im going through with it regardless, but i just want to know about what to expect.

For a turbo motor, you need to retard the timing curve on boost, unless your running a rom tune that already does that. The MSD 6 series will increase spark and help out at higher boost levels. Definitly a good item to add.

Not yet, as of now I am running a 100 shot for another month or two.

I did notice an improvement after the install but I wouldn't say that it was a necessity. I bought it from a friend for $100 new and figured I would try it out. That and the timing controller I had needed to be used with the msd but its out and the btm is going in.

I think it is worth buying. Like WD said, the wiring can be a PITA but if you take your time it isn't really that bad. My biggest problem was where to mount it and hiding the wires.
