i own a 93 240sx coupe and im looking at another coupe that a friend of a friend is tryin to get rid of. i compared my motor sound to his, and his has a slight rattle/clicking sound coming from the timing chain/valve cover area. the miles on the motor are only about 70k total with receipts and documentation to prove it.

should i be worried? how do i get rid of the tick or should i just ignore it?

probably wouldnt be too worried but would definately get it fixed soon. more than likely it is a timing chain or possibly a lifter, either one isnt serious if it is fixed as soon as possible

the offical fix from Nissan is to remove the chain guard...open valve cover and there is a metal thing right above the chain...remove it.

I've heard that if it is ticking against the upper guide that the cause is oil starvation.

Is that safe? Cause mine is ticking from the chain guides.

I would take it off before it snaps off. I have seen quite a few snap off and bounce between the timing chain and valve cover.

well there are these things that come from Nissan to the mechanics and it states that their stand on is to take off the guide...thingy... but you could on the other hand take 12hours or so and replace the chain your self.

either or something got to go.
