While driving down the highway every once in a while I feel a small clunking/rattle in the steering column /wheel. I think I feel it on the highway because it is smooth for the most part and I can pin point it a bit more. It almost feels like it is feed back from a wheel clanking or something low in the steering column. Could it be CV joints. Haven't tried driving in a tight circle and listening.

Also when I turn of the rogue I sometimes get this sound like a belt slipping a wine/whistle. Could this be condensation on the compressor belt for the AC it has been ridicously hot here in Oklahoma lately.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there, it's difficult to say for sure. I good inspection of your front end will let you know if you have a problem, a clunk could be related to ball joints but it depends when you have the clunk. Does it happen when you hit bumps, or just randomly when driving straight? If it's a highway problem when driving straight you could also have an issue with wheel bearings. There could be an issue with your steering rack if you get noises and clunks when turning the wheel, but a good tech could elminate the possiblities and find the problem pretty quick. Sorry I can't say for sure, there are a few things that could be wrong, those are a few of my guesses.

On the hwy how fast is the clunk rotating? Same as wheel speed? Or it's pace is every 2 secs?

I wouldnt touch the belt hot, you could stretch it out if it's that hot.

you wont get condensation on your belt. even if you did - it wont cause noise. you hit puddles during rainfall and nothing makes noise right? i suggest you get your car checked out. there were TSB's on a screw coming loose on the steering system and it can cause failure to control the car at worst case scenario. id schedule an appoint asap.

I have a similar question, but I didn't want to start a new thread.

For the last three four months, when I am driving on a rough surface, like cracked asphalt or manhole covers, there is a rattle noise from the left side of the car. Somewhere under the speedometer. I was always blaming the remote starter's black box. The dealer installed that box for the remote starter and it is just tie wrapped to the cable harness under the steering wheel.

The noise is like an old car with a worn rod end or loose cv joint. not something coming from a plastic electronic box. Yesterday I found the source: the steering wheel.

i captured a movie with my camera, but you cannot hear the noise. So I will try to describe it: When the car is stopped, without engine running, when I shake/vibrate the steering wheel left right quickly, I can replicate the same noise. It is like the steering wheeel is loose! I Think when the car is on a rough surface, the wheel shakes and it causes the same noise as i shake the steering wheel, since they are connected...

My plan is to go to the dealer and see if a new Rogue's steering wheel makes the same noise when I shake. probably not, so I will go adn complain the service, without worrying about replicating the noise.

however, I was worried when I read ImStricken's reply. Can you please share that TSB? i really want to read that document.

here you guy buddy :)

NTB09112 - CP 2008 - 2009 Rogue; Steering Gear - Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign

On some 2008 - 2009 Rogue vehicles, the steering gear housing cover screw may have been manufactured incorrectly. Over time, the screw may gradually loosen, and could possibly fall out. To correct this issue, Nissan is conducting this Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign to confirm the steering gear housing cover screw is tight, and also install a "lock plate" to prevent the screw from possibly coming out of the steering gear housing. See this bulletin for further detail.

NHTSA Recall Notice:

Vehicle Make / Model: NISSAN / ROGUE

Model Year(s): 2008-2009

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 09V411000

Summary:

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 ROGUE VEHICLES. A SCREW IN THE STEERING GEAR HOUSING COVER MAY LOOSEN OVER TIME AND COULD FALL OUT. AS IT LOOSENS, THE STEERING RESPONSE OF THE VEHICLE MAY BE COMPROMISED BUT THE DRIVER WILL RETAIN STEERING CONTROL.

Consequence:THE SCREW MAY EVENTUALLY COME OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR COVER. IF LARGE STEERING INPUTS ARE MADE WITH THE COVER SCREW MISSING THE PINION SHAFT MAY COME OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR RESULTING IN A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:DEALERS WILL INSPECT WHETHER THE STEERING GEAR COVER SCREW IS LOOSE AND WILL BE RETIGHTENED TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATION. DEALERS WILL ALSO INSTALL A COVER PLATE TO PREVENT THE SCREW FROM POSSIBLY COMING OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Notes:OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

Transport Canada Recall # 2009303
Recall Date: 2009/10/19
Notification Type: Safety
MfrSystem: Steering
Manufacturer Recall Number:
Units Affected: 23,323
Category: SUV

Recall Details:On certain vehicles, the steering gear housing cover screw may have been manufactured out of specification and the axial tension between the screw and gear housing may deteriorate over time. This could allow the screw to gradually loosen, which will cause the steering wheel to exhibit noticeable looseness from the steering assembly. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the screw may eventually come out of the steering gear housing. If large steering inputs are made with the cover screw missing, the pinion shaft may come out of the steering gear. This may result in a loss of steering control, which could lead to a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect whether the steering gear cover screw is loose. If it is loose, it will be retightened to the proper specification. In addition, the dealer will install a cover plate to prevent the screw from possibly coming out of the steering gear.

Thank you ImStricken...But this TSB is not applicable for 2011 Rogues, right? they already fixed that problem in the later models I assume.
