Just this weekend i changed all three belts on my 1990 240sx. While changing the belts i noticed that the tensioner for the powersteering pump's bearing was a little rough. Tried to find the bearing with no luck on sat. So i put the old one back on. After the car was back together and running when i start it you can slightly hear a bearing squel/roar coming form near the altenator. Then as i accelerate from a stop, once i hit about 2000rpms up until about 2500rpms the car will start to vibrate noticable starting with the right front and extending thoughout the whole car. I have since found the bearing for the tensioner and attempted to get it pressed in but after speaking to a mechanic in town he said that the bearing was crimped in and the whole pulley would have to be replaced so as not to throw the belt later once the bearing has walked it self out of the pulley being as it is not crimped in. After talking with this mechanic about my problem he said that most vibrations through the body are diveline related and that a problem with my belts(which changing created the problem) would not usually result in vibration. But the thing is that the vibration does happen all the time it only happens inbetween 2000 and 2500 rpms. Also i have used the old pry bar trick to locate the bearing sound. I used the pry bar as a stethiscope(spelling?) on the altenator, waterpump, and p.s. tensioner. From that test the altenator has the worst/roughest sound, but could the altenator be causing my vibration? I have also tested my engine mounts, and they are pretty bad, being as with the car in drive and i gas it i can see the engine twist in the bay both in forward and reverse. What do you guys think could be my problem. My dad thought that the ujoints were going out but now thinks that the altenator bearings are shot and that is what is causing the vibration due to the fact that it doesnt vibrate all the time. I trust his oppinion being as he is a old mechanic but he has never had a japanese car and still tries to tell me that some of the fasteners are sae. If any of yall can help me i would be very thankful being as this is driving me crazy tring to figue this out.Brad

back the tension off the belt a bit. you may have it over tightened. if that doesnt help your bearings are probably bad in the alt and the new belt tension has just helped them along.

i backed the tension off the belt and drive the car to school. no change in the situation but the bearing squel/roar has increased. what just baffles me is how would bad bearings in the altenator cause so much vibration. everyone who has riden in my car tries to say that it is from some drive line component but the problem is only there between 2000-2500 rpms and then it is gone for while and just replace with the squel of the bearing. anyone else have any suggestions.

I have this in my car, but it rattles through 2000 and then smooths out. I think its something a little rough with the 4 banger. thats been my assumption, if there is another solution, somebody enlighten me, but I think that something is a little off balance causing it to resonate at low RPMs

im pretty sure that this isnt just something wrong with the 4 cylinder because this only started happening this weekend and its not just a resonation its an actual vibration that shakes the car but i just dont understand what would cause it. tomorrow morning be for i go to school i am going to jack the car up and take altenator belt off and wiggle the pulley to see whats up. has any one else had this sort of problem caused by the altenator? really need to get this sorted out.
