SL rated oil in a 2009 Rogue that specifies SM

The title states my question. I have 15 qts of SL rated Castrol 0W-30 oil. The owners manual states SM 5W-30. I like the Castrol but am worried about warranty claims since it is rated SL. Also, is it safe to use a low SAPS oil in this vehicle?Thanks.

The SL standard is prior to 2005, when the SM standard was introduced. Using an SL rated oil in 2005 and newer vehicles is not recommended. The standard exists for a reason as engine mfgs. are constantly improving their products and require oils which lower deposits (sludge), do not contaminate catalytic converters, and meet certain wear requirements. The SM rating is an improvement over SL in these respects.

Not using the 'proper' lubricant can void the warranty. It's written in your warranty booklet on page 6:

Tcmo, don't throw that oil away too fast: From what I remember (I don't have the manuals with me and this is my wife's computer so I don't have the electronic copy either) but I think you can use SL oil as long as it is API certified.

Check you owner manual.

The owners manual for 2009 specifies 5W-30 SM oil for the US, but SM or SL for Mexico and various weights depending on temperature. That's one reason why I asked the question-the mechanical specs for the engine seem to be the same for both locations. I'll use the SL oil in our 1999 Subaru.Thanks again.
