My car started running on 5 cyl about a week ago...and I started testing the coils and the plugs, and cylinder 2 was not sparking at all. I noticed that the clip was broke (actually dissintegrated), and after an inspection and re-install....I started the car up and the thing went up in smoke in exactly 2 minutes....freakin just blew. I just installed a new coil from an 94 Q45, and same thing....the coil cracked, melted up and smoked AGAIN after about 2 minutes!!!

WTF!!!!

It doesn't look like the harness is tampered with....and I didnt mix up the three wires...I had them marked. I am wondering if it has anything to do with the spark plug (unlikely, but who knows) or the harness or that little ignition controller by the firewall. ANY IDEAS....or diagnostic advise so that I can figure out what the real problem is???

Thanks everyone!!!

It really can be only two things. Ignitor or ECU..

I would unplug the harness and measure the voltages across the pins on the "good" cylinders, then do the same on the bad one. See if you can see a change (such as the gound pin that fires the coil staying grounded).

I would suspect ignitor, and if it isn't its prob. a good idea to have an extra one.

Not sure if testing the ignitor is in the FSM but I suspect it is.

Any clue where I can buy these parts and what they cost??? There probably is a huge variance from place to place though.....

....oh by the way....I noticed that both coils that blew where burnt on the negative side of the three pins. Thats strange....why would the coils just overheat on the negative side of the coil???

Just something I noticed....maybe that would shed some more light on the situation. Does anyone know where I can get coils for the rb20 that are less than 120 dollars????

Thanks.
