I have had a 1990 Nissan 300ZX N/A (non turbo) for about a year now and i was wondering if i could do a single larger turbo conversion for less than the twins or if it would be about the same or what? I am on a limited budget so price is a big factor. If it is possible could anybody tell me what parts i would need and where to find them? Also would any turbo kits for other vehicles fit my car with little to no modification? Thanks

Ther is no point to do a single turbo. Also, basically, since you have an NA, you must do a full on Twin Turbo conversion if you want boost. People have boosted NA motors, but I find it silly b/c the gains are little since you can't run high boost and the price is not that much better.

I'd just stick with Twin turbos, but if thats not in your budget you could make a decent amount of power with the car being NA.

Id really like arond 300-350 HP. What exactly would you recommend doing to it while its a NA, or what parts are actually NECESSARY to do the NA to twin turbo conversion? Thanks

If money is an object, a custom setup single turbo isn't the way to go. Getting a TT front clip and going with the VG30DETT is your answer.

Hello new to the forum. I have a 1990 300zx N/A and have been able to modify my car in order to have a rear mounted turbo installed underneath where the spare tire wheel well used to be. I've used a T3 RB20 turbo at 5psi with an internal waste gate and BOV. I have less then $800 into it and every part is new including the turbo purchased off of ebay for $239, oil pump for $99, y pipe for $20, T3 flange adapter for $30, 8 feet of 2 inch exhaust tubing $45 Bov used ebay $25 and $140 paid to the exhaust to be welded and bent properly. $50 worth of brake lines, adapters, clamps, vacume lines and fittings. $10 for radiator hose, and $35 boost gauge. $100 for high volume fuel pump. Bascically I removed the two mufflers from the cat placed 2 s bend pipe in their places that led into a y pipe. The single outlet side has a t3 flange welded at a 45 degree angle to which I bolted the turbo. The pressurised side is fed to the front of the car using 2 inch exhaust tubing with to l bends that eventually get tied into the air mass sensore. the exhaust side as a 3 in l exhaust pipe that acts as the exhaust tip. No need for muffler because the turbo quiets it down. I'm currently running 5-6 psi and it makes a huge difference. Sounds like a jet plane when launching and hard accelerating. Under normal driving it kicks in around 3200 rpm . believe it can be done. I'll forward pictures if you want to see.

I could not disagree more, my single rear mount turbo has made a huge difference in my cars temperment. What's even better that the set up is so very stealth under normal driving , then just breaks all out when you throttle up aggressively, sounds like a jet taking off I have pics under the thread rear mount turbo on the z32 forum

Hi, I am thinking of doing the same modification to my 300ZX NA 2 + 2. If possible can you please forward me some pictures of your setup. I hope you can also answer some question for me if I come across a few bumps in the road along the way.

Ive been thinking almost the same layout. Now did you have to have your ECU remaped or replaced?

Really? So how does the motor know if its a twin or single setup? The stocker will be fine to 6-7psi. Call Reed at Work Turbos and discuss it with him.
Twins are much more expensive.

Personally I dont like rear mounted setups. Turbos need heat. I was able to fit a 4788 in my 300 with a small block chevy, so room for a smaller turbo and the stock motor should not be an issue. Plan things out well and you will be ok. You will need injectors and a GOOD tune though.

Building a forged rotating assembly and running 20-30 psi will just destroy the driveline and twist the car up.

I just went to the thread that discusses the Vilmenay's build and on page 3 or 4, there is another guy who just bought the car off of him because he blew his motor. Not sure this setup is what you want.

Mitch @ EPRacing can make custom manifolds for your single, or any type for that matter. Man is a genius. Better have deep pockets though, for his quality you pay.

Only single turbo that I have seen online that was successful for the Z32. Awesome car. Extremely Modified as well.

Yeah that car is sick. But I guarantee those horse power goals could've been reached for cheaper going twin turbo. It's possible to do, that hasn't been in question. It's the practicality of that whole shebang.
