Okay, I've got the original KA24E back in my hatch... It's only got 80,180K miles i think... but it's not runnin right..

It's runnin rich - you can smell the gas sometimes... It will almost never idle right, I set the idle to 2k and it idles at like 800 or 900. I have to put it in neutral at stop lights, cuz if i stop while it's in drive it'll stall. Also, I do not get a CEL, so my guess is a vacuum leak.

What do you guys think?? And if it is a vacuum leak, how do I check to make sure and fix it??

Time to break out the multimeter. Do you have one? If so let me know and we'll walk through the testing of all the major sensors. That is where I would start.

A decent way to check for the presence and location of vaccum leaks is by spraying carb cleaner around various parts of the vaccum tubes with the engine running. Changes in idle speed may indicate that you've just sprayed carb cleaner in the vicinity of a leak.

I have a 1989 240sx hatch and i am having the same problem. But when i stop at a light it feels like the car is going stall. My RPM's jump from 1000 to 300, and the car feels like its going to shut down. I noticed though when I opened the hood and kept the car in gear, sparks were jumpin out of the spark plug. I looks like the previous owner did not change the spark plug wires and they have gone bad? Because the car only acts up when I have it in Drive or Reverse. Even when I accelerate sometimes, it feels like its struggling to pick up speed but then it just goes. I thought I was the only person with this problem

A mechanic told me it could be the timing that is off or the MAFS. But when I seen the spark jump out of the plug that was my only answer. Try the carb thing if not I dont know because Im still trying to figure my dilemma out. And as far as you smelling gas especially when your in the car is a sign of misfire. One of your pistons is not moving and the gas is not burning so you smell gas.

Other ideas? Well...yes - get a multimeter.

heh

Seriously - you get get one for as cheap as $15 and it's priceless when it comes to testing sensors.
