I have a 92 300zx 2 seater non turbo. 5spd "project car."

1st - The engine was swapped out with a JDM 40k on it. When i shift from 1st to 2nd the gears grind at a mid to higher RPM. Low rpm it will not grind. I was told its a better idea and cheaper to just swap the transmission than hunt through the sinchros ?

2nd - Anybody know of a good cat back exhaust for this car ? I cant find any that are under 1000 bux. Hard to find for a non turbo.

3rd - 1st and 2nd gear when i "get on it" feels like im driving in sand.....sluggish and then it will sort of "take off" - hessitation. Could this be the Airfilter(K&N) or flow sensor ?

Thanks - Sully

Welcome to the forum!

1) Change your transmission fluid. I recommend MT-90 from Redline. You'll need a bit over 3 quarts, so better get 4. That will eliminate the grind in many cases, but will help if it doesn't eliminate it. Also flush and bleed out your clutch system. Last resort is to install a heavy duty clutch fork from Zspeedperformance.com. Completely eliminated my grinding.

2) $875.00 will get you the best exhaust available for the Z32, a Specialty Z exhaust. That's with resonators (highly recommended) and quad round tips (personal preference). No resonators and single rounds would be $745. It's loud, but it flows the best, other than the ricetastic HKS HiPer

3) In the future, definitely search first, but here is a free fish for today :)

Thanks a lot Boston. I dont have a garage here so ill have to have it done by a local tech. I adopted this car as a project and now i am having to go over "everything" and "un-fudge" all the previous efforts to toy up my rice. Im a Bostonian at heart as well, going to see the PATS vs Eagles this weekend here in Phili. So doing a transmission swap at 1st is just an easy way for the techs to make a few bucks on me ?? I should have tooled around on car more when i was younger.
Thanks,
Sean

NP, glad to help :dblthumb:

Yes, a transmission swap is easy money for a shop. Fluid change first, because the used transmission could be the same or worse than the one you have now.

Add your location to your profile and people can help with more local advice (other members/shops etc)

I Understand, thanks. The car had sat in Las Vegas in a guys garage for 2 years after he bought it and all he did was put 19's with 30 series tires on it. Nice look on the car but a nightmare to drive here in NJ. I took those off and put on factory tires and rims while i work on it through the winter. Ill do the transmission fluid R/R this week and post any results. Thanks

The windshiel washer resevoir inthe rear deck lid, drivers side of my 92 300 zx 2 door / Non turbo has been " hissing" for about 2 weeks. So i filled it with fluid and the system still does not spit wash to my windshield, though the light on the dash went out. PROBLEM - after running the car for 2 minutes i heard a KNOCK, like someone knocking bowling balls together (just one knock) and i immediately shut off my engine. Under the left side of the manifold in the engine compartment i now see blue water drops coming from what seems to be outta nowhere ? Any ideas before i attempt to start the car again ? Thanks -Sean
