Over the last 16 years my Q has received dealer oil Valvoline 10w30 for about 95% of the first 100,000 miles and Mobile 1 10w30 synthetic for the next 170,000 miles and back to Valvoline 10w30-40 for the last 37,000 miles. At 300,000 miles I switched to 10w40 to cut down on consumption!
Much more important than WHAT OIL YOU USE is how often you change it!Not so much the oil as the small tiny filter area and the chance of the filter going into bypass mode at high rpm/load [passing and 75-80 mph cruise].
As the oil evaporates it gets thicker and the oil pressure goes up and thus the closer you get to filter bypass.........the only fix is to use a synthetic which evaporates less or change the conventional oil faster.
Even with synthetic I have never exceeded 5,000 miles and always change the oil every 90 days even if the car sat most of the time!
The 90day oil change at dealer was to allow them to work hard to find WARRANTY things that could be fixed to allow them to make money. I encouraged them to spend time on finding things especially from 60,000 to 100,000 on the paid for by me extended warranty.
I was very sucessful my $1500 in cash got me $8,000 in replacements!
The above was for a Q used in SE US never being driven north of Virginia except a few times in Summer.............your location will determine the viscosity you should use
307,000 miles and still meets oem spec [14 psi] for oil pressure hot idle in SUMMER.
The problem with buying a used car is you can almost be assured that it will not have been maintained this well.
Testing oil presssure and graphing it vs coolant and rpm tells you what to do.
