multimeter the battery. If it's below 12v, probably like 10-11, battery is low. You may need to do a "longer jumpstart" - i.e. let the battery charge for a few first, then start the dead car.
If that doesn't work, or if battery is close to 12v, have her turn the key while you take a pipe or bat or something and tap the starter. If that starts the car -> starter is bad.
Once everything checks out and car is running, do a multimeter check on the battery again and if it is showing 13v+, usually 14, then your alternator is ok also.
