Post

Hello, this is my first post. Finally my dreams of owning a 240sx have become a reality, I was able to get a 240sx that's just a little rough around the edges in my price range. Anyways, I'm not trying to talk your head off so heres my question

preliminary information

its a 1989 240sxthe power steering isn't workingthe guy who I bought it from said that it needs belt for power steering and power steering fluid

if the power steering isn't working is it because of what I mentioned or is it more complicated than that?

If all I need is fluid and a belt, I'm pretty sure I know where the power steering fluid goes but I'm not sure what pulleys the belt go on and how to put the belt on, if someone could explain this to me I'd really appreciate it. I tried searching not only the forums but the entirety of the internet to find a solution to my problem but to no such luck. I'm not the most mechanically adept person(but I am very good at following instructions) and I guess that replacing the power steering belt is something so simple that most people assume that you just already know how to do this. If someone could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it, if I'm being to vague let me know what other information is needed and I'll be glad to provide that. theeeeeaaaaaannnnkkkssss

Freakin congrats man! Well I'm bout tired so I'll do what I can for ya

First off, does it even have a belt there? If not, then the power steering absolutely will not work lol

It sounds etchy though, the power steering system might have a leak, or maybe he just liked driving without it, either way replacing/installing the belt's not too bad. Actually I replaced my power steering belt on my single cam with the fan still on, you just gotta work at a casual pace and get comfortable with everything

But yeah theoretically if you put a belt on the pump, put some tension on it of course , and fill up the fluid it should work! unless there's some other problem.

Good luck to ya, ttyl man

I thought that the 89's were only single cam? If not tell me how to differentiate between the two and I'll go check. No it doesn't have any belt at all, he showed me the pulleys so I know like the general area but I'd like to know which one does what, and more importantly what I'm doing. the previous owner had at least 2 other vehicles, and didn't drive it everyday like I plan to so I think that's why he never bothered to get the power steering working, same thing with the previous owner before him(who rebuilt the engine).

Well so many people swap out their single cam for twin cam engines, but anyways the differences are like so:

single cam ka24e spark plugs insert from the side, the valve cover has the little lines/ridges going longways..

The twin cam has the spark plugs going in directly from the top,

g2g hope that's enough for ya for now I"ll gbty

Ok, it's definitely the sohc, spark plugs were going in the side. It also said "Nissan 2400 12v" on the valve cover, I don't know if they all say that or not, that might help.

Anyways when I went out there to check I looked again at the pulley that I believe is the power steering, and I see what you're talking about putting the belt on while the fan is there, not a whole lot of room to maneuver but you still have some room nonetheless.

If I'm not mistaken I'm going to put the belt around the 2 pulleys infront of the fan right? If that's the case then I noticed that there were 2 other pulleys below them and to the left a little bit that were also missing a belt, what purpose do those pulleys serve? Do I need to get belts for all 4 of these pulleys or is it one belt for all of them? I'm a little confused here, and don't want to do anything to harm my vehicle, any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks

Ok, so I got the belt on, that was pretty self explanatory I just can't seem to figure out how to put tension on it, if someone could breifly explain that to me I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
