am helping a friend turbocharge his 89 KA24E. And finding this forum is going to save us and the car !!! I think i'm going to look for a KA and blow it too!

We are deciding on engine management and we think that the best route to take would be to socket the stock ecu and go from there.

Is this what it will take to reprogram his stock KA24E ecu:

1. Live Edit freeware 2. romulator (http://xtronics.com/memory/pktROM.htm) 3. eprom burner (so that we can take what we get from the romulator and burn it to an eprom so that he won't have to have his laptop on all the time when he's driving) 4. eeprom (reflashable eprom so that we can change stuff down the road. he has a t3 now and wants to upgrade to a t3/t04E H-3 later)

anything missing or needs to be changed?

thanx

dont know much about the sohc ecu's...i know the dohc ecu's are a little harder to socket. I think the sohc cam guys have done this with sucess. You might want to look into BikiRom. its an autrailian website and that guy know his stuff about socketing any nissan ecu u can think of. When he gets his new boards finished im going that route.

i've heard elseware good reviews on that romulator... and that it works really good with Live Edit. I think Live Edit was created with this romulator in mind.

I'm used to tuning my dsm with dsmlink. it's not as cheap as tuning this way with this ecu, but the eprom and daughter bord is plug and play, no eprom burners and romulators. its all included in one software program and one eprom and one daughter board. BUT, like i said it is cheap at almost TWICE as much. I mean everyone thinks dsmlink is super cheap for what you get and there's not much more versitility than this route for nissan ecus.

Has anyone actually tuned their KA with this method. We're starting to feel like we're going to be venturing into uncharted waters with this one. everyone says it is possible but so is a stand alone . Has anyone gotten this to work on a sohc KA.

it has been done. there is a guy in australia that makes everything you need, and so you could save some money and get it all from him probably... it may cost more, i'm not really sure, but what he does is pretty awesome. i'm looking into his new daughterboard setup for my car. he makes all the old eprom stuff, and that's what he started with, but he likes this new daughterboard that he's working on more so he started making those. the new board relaces the need for eproms... all of the stuff is pretty impressive. take a look at it. http://www.bikirom.comit will, in the end, cost you roughly the same as having someone else flash the ecu for you (like jwt, or whoever) but in the end you will have everything you need to retune it time and time again whenever you want to... which is something jwt, or whoever else will do for you also, but for lots of money every time. $500-$600 is probably going to be what price you will be looking at in the end. this includes the price of software and hardware for the ecu, a new mafs, and a new wideband. you might be able to find things cheap but i doubt it getting much, if any cheaper than $500.

I am running my SOHC KA with the romulator in place of the eprom. The romulator runs a back up battery to retain the contents of the rom, this battery only lasts about a year i've heard. If the battery dies, contents of romulator disappear, so it's a good idea to keep a spare ecu in the car just in case (well i do anyway).

I ran the serial cable from the romulator to the glovebox at which i can then upload new maps whenever i like. You only need to buy an eeprom burner if you settle on a tune and just want to run that tune only; otherwise the romulator alone is perfect.

For all the SOHC people, don't bother with the bikirom stuff, it is not needed.

One tip, buy the romulator that is capable of emulating 512kb rom's, that way you can run 2 maps which can then be switched by switching one of the pins in the romulator socket; i don't remember which one though.

Pump and race gas tunes . where did you get your romulator that emulates the large chips?

If the battery dies can't just have an exra battery, pop it in and install the tune again (if you saved the tune) with a loaptop you keep in the hatch?

Do you use Live Edit? If you do what config do you use? do you use the sr20det? . . . i've heard that that is the closest to match a KA. is this true? I have never gotten a hold of a stock KA config file...

...now you see how much of a noob i am

Yea, i went over there and was searching around for an hour or two. And everyone says that the KA24E is easy, it has a simple eprom. but that's it. no config files not even much on live edit itself. i think that bikirom is mainly for sr20 and de ecus which have a more difficult chip design to tune.

Well, DIY stock ECU tuning isnt very popular. I think most people are afraid of making a serious mistake.

Hopefully SSS can give you further advice...

wheelhop, the only live edit config file for the KA24E is for the Australian fwd U12 Pintara with the KA24E, which is what i am using the romulator in.

I'm 99% sure the map locations are different for the USDM rwd KA24E in the S13, contact DeviousKA, i believe he has the correct file you are looking for.

Oh, and i don't have the romulator capable of 512kb emulation, i bought the cheaper one that will do upto 256kb emulation.
