I'm sure this is a silly question, but my cam gears seem to be at 9:55 and 11:55 (instead of 10 and 12 respectively) when the crank is in the TDC position. Is this normal, or am I off a tooth?

Thanks in advance!

Are all the dots/marks lined up? I would do that first and then you'll know if your off a tooth. I watched my mechanic actually take the chain off and move just the cam to where it needed to be even though all marks were lined up. Cam timing was off a little.... Maybe you have the same situation.

Setting your cam timing is probably the most tedious thing you will ever do to an SR while it is still in your car. I agree with schanne on this, and recommend you refer to the following thread I made a while back. how-to-set-your-srs-timing-in-30-minute ... 98297.html

Thank you both very much for your replies. PyRONiAk, I will follow your procedure and let you know how it turns out. I am assuming I'm off a tooth on both cam gears. It looks like the previous owner of this engine set the timing to the first notch on the crank pulley, because when it's in that position, intake is at 10 and exhaust is at twelve. So it seems that I just have to slide the chain over. Thanks, guys!!

Both cam lobes to the front of the block should be facing outward also when setting timing correctly.

I pretty much knew all that already, but I was a little concerned because the cam gears were off by a tiny amount, like less than a tooth almost (it's pretty negligible) . But The timing checked out when I counted the teeth. Then when I removed the tensioner, it looked identical to pictures seen on frsport and JWT websites. So, I think it's good actually. Thanks for all your advice, that's some really useful info!
