I am considering picking up some silicone hose to replace the crumbling lines on my ka24de. How does this stuff compare to the rubber/silicone mix Nissan uses as OEM? It's a little cheaper than getting new hose from Nissan (which is kind of a pain, really. He wanted me to list all the specific hoses I need, then admitted they order it in bulk, but don't know the inside diameter...meh I have had enough trouble with ordering coolant lines from them to get involved in this. I live too far away). Is this stuff any good, or a flashy ricer lure? I'm definitely not putting a bunch of red hoses and neons under my hood, I just want something reliable (so no autozone crap either).

they work fine as long as you get something good - i.e. a Mr. Gasket one or something.

The thick kind that doesn't collapse and you'll be fine.

I found some that's about .1" thick (2.5mmm), and I figure I can do all the vacuum lines for about $100 with that stuff. I might go with that, if I don't have to worry about it splitting/melting/slipping off. It doesn't seem like it would have the grip of rubber. I wonder if normal nylon cable ties would hold up in the bay...especially the lines near the block/head that would see the most heat and can't be reached when everything is together. Heh, the more I look at it, the bigger I realize my Great Rubber Replacement project is going to be.

I ended up getting some from Baker Precision. I got it all installed (I also replaced all the coolant and fuel lines...not with silicone, of course), what a pain! I don't know if I would have been able to get to all of the hoses with the head on. The silicone had no problem with kinking (cutting them the same length as the originals worked out best, even those around the E.G.R. and S.C.V. control solenoid valves that loop and twist...I originally thought cutting them longer would help prevent kinking, but made it worse), and they seem like they will be durable as long as they don't get sliced accidentally. This is my main concern. I have found they are very susceptible to sharp edges. It is easy to accidentally knick the surface, so care is needed. I only had to use cable ties and also some RTV in a couple places to keep the hose secure (the 6mm and 8mm hoses, just to be sure), the other lines seem secure without fasteners. The total hose needed was: 4mm(20'), 6mm(5'), 8mm(5'). These amounts leave little, if any, room for errors. The 4mm hose has a wall thickness of 2mm, and the 8mm hose has a wall thickness of 3mm. Total price: $67.50 (It's $45 in red and blue...I went with silver) plus shipping, plus an arm and a leg from my Nissan dealer for coolant and PS hoses, and fuel line from autozone (Goodyear brand). It was a PITA but all the old rubber is FINALLY gone, taking several leaks with it. I'm just waiting for my new lower timing chain tensioner before I get her running again.

I have always gotten my hoses from http://www.StylinMotors.com. They have excellent quality and awesome customer service. Was short about 3 ft. of hose one time, called em up and said I needed some more. Had it in 2 days no charge, my jaw hit the floor. It wasn't their fault I had measured wrong. Prices are very good too, and I always compare prices when I shop.
