Signs of worn-out timing belt?

I was browsing around for a Z on craigslist and I came across this one: http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/cto/4301554819.html
Only 76k original miles?! :mike Being that most other Z's in my area are in the 100k mile range, this is definitely an automatic attention grabber!
But when I called and asked the guy if the 60k mile service has been done, he replied with "The previous owner said that it was done at 65k miles" So he does not posses any receipts or any documentation to prove that it has been done :ohno: But what popped in my mind after I got off the phone with him was: "Why is he selling the car so soon?" I don't know how others would react but that definitely raises a flag/suspicion to me.
So is there any way to tell if the belt is worn out without having to remove the covers?

This seems like a good idea, as I own a timing light, trying this out wouldn't be an inconvenience to me. But is there any other "tests" that I could try out to figure out the condition of the timing belt?

When in doubt assume it needs changed. If it was done there should be at minimum a sticker (usually on the timing belt cover) I put mine on the underside of the hood. that states the date and mileage of when the timing belt was done. Otherwise only way to tell is to remove the timing belt covers and on a belt supposedly as new as that one if it was in fact changed should still have a newish appearance with the various lines and writing on the belt.

looks like a nice z, I would try to talk him down to 5800-6000 then you have almost enough to pay to have the belt done.

better safe than sorry with the Z . they are zero tolerance motors and if the belt breaks............ game over

That youtube video approach seems unlikely to me. Chains nor belts stretch, so I'm not sure what he is getting at.

Chains and belts do stretch with age. That's why you have belt/chain tensioners that adjusts with belt/chain wear. Yeah I do agree that his approach is a little off, and...corny
