I know of the famous rotten egg smell, but what are some other signs of a plugged catalytic converter, or aren't there any really?

well i could tell you my experience with a plugged cat. my car sat undriven for like a month because of a blown head gasket, then i fixed that and it still wouldnt run, so i figured my friend would pull me around see if i can get things moving manually, so about the 3rd time its starting to run a lil and the next time i try i hear the biggest explosion ever. and look in my mirror, wats behind me but a bunch of red hot coals(i did this at nite so it was dark out) i thought i blew my motor, but my car was running! i freaked and turned it off and looked under the hood, i could see my cat glowing red behind the shield. it was crazy. thats another way a cat can get plugged.(coolant, heat, sittin around= plugged cat)

Thanks for the first hand experience. I think I might just bore out the cat until I get a new exhaust.
