So about 2 weeks ago I bought my first 240sx, and I’m noticing a huge aftermarket following for parts on ebay (not quite as big as the civic following, but getting there). I’m a full time college student so trying to do things on a budget.

First thing I’m considering is a cold air intake, I would love an Injen, but I can’t afford it :(. SO…. I’m looking at the genero ones that they sell on ebay for about $50 shipped, with the K&N wannabe filter and magical air filter heat shield thingy. My 240 is an 89 and I’m noticing that they don’t have any for that year!? Is there a difference in the cold air intakes between 89-90 and 91-98? I know the motor is different, but would it affect the fitment? The only ones I see for mine are adapters to adapt the k&n style to replace the box, ewwww (at least that’s what I think it does).. Would it be possible to retro fit the cold air intakes meant for the newer motor into mine?

I was also thinking of maybe lowering the car; can anyone suggest some good springs? Or Coilovers? Its gotta be cheap!, in the below $150 range. I saw a set of Coilovers going for $45 buy it now on ebay that look nice (really really nice), but you get what you pay for keeps ringing in the back of my mind. never having bought coilovers i really dont know what to look for, can anyone tell me if these are at least decent? So I'm thinking that springs are going to be all I can afford since brand name Coilovers systems are going for well over $600… I Need an inch and a half drop at least.

-Cold Air intake system $45 w/shipping-

-Air intake adapter with filter $7.50-

-Coilover system for $45-

you cannot get a set of coilovers for below 150.. for 150 you cant even get 4 springs... Remember you do get what you pay for in the car world...

You might want to get cheap pipings for your intake but no cheapie on the filter cone because that's where the actual power comes from...

I suggest - save then do it right the first time. No regrets.

the intake stuff is okay for that price

the so called 'coilovers' are just springs and you'll need to buy shocks/struts to go with that.

you should get a real k&n cone filter from ebay(saw some for $50), and cut your springs. seems like it meets your budget.

Hi thanks for the replies.

Ilikemy240sx, can you recommend any brand names for springs? Are tein any good? I’ve heard of Eibach, I’ve seen the Eibachs for the s13 going for about 100-200 for a set of 4 brand new. I’m not planning on going drifting or anything; just want it to be lower so I can go getting it ready for wheels. The person I bought it from bought new tires for it but its got hubcaps, crossing over to wheels as soon as the thread is low enough and I can justify going out and spending 600 for a set of wheels and tires.

sillk, is there any difference between the cold air intake kits for the dohc motor and the kits for the sohc motor? I still haven’t seen any cold air intakes for the sohc motor. Are you saying I can just use the intake made for a dohc motor on my sohc?

240drft, thanks for the info, I’ll definitely look into the k&n cone, no I wont cut my springs, makes the car ride like crap.

i'm thinkin about gettin the k&n. i wouldnt cut my springs either. the springs depend on how low u want, the tein s-tech springs go for about $150 shipped on ebay, they only lower about an inch or so. i got eibach sportlines for $188 shipped from tire rack and they lower about 2"

you could just get your set of rims now, and keep your hubcap set with the new tires as winter rims :D

not sure where you're located, but i have a set of the stock rims with nearly brand new tires on them, and that's what i'm gonna do this winter (if i even have to drive the car at all)

for me, the tien springs definately got lower then they said...I.E. i can put 2 fingers in between the rear wheel arch and the tire...so maybe 1" of wheel gap...which is ideal if you ask me...but then agian i have big wheels/tires

245/45/17 is kinda tall for a 240

trust me on this, do not get that 7.50 adapter with filter.

i ordered a k&N filter with adapter from an ebay seller g4racing for about 50 bucks, turns out to be universal parts that dont fit ( i think all those adapters are the same universal junk). i was able to return for a full refund and then by luck i guess i found a real K&N popcharger designed for s13 by K&N(adapter that actually fits and made from K&N themselvs) that go for 120 - 150 new. i picked it up for 26 bucks used, (with a mafs sensor still atatched). it was dirty as hell but i picked up a k&N recharge kit and its good as new.

i would like to suggest that you get suspension parts first. build a solid platform and you can get much more "joy" out of your mods as time and money permits
