Has anyone removed the side moldings or "door guards" ? Does anyone know if they are double sided tape or glue or have the retaining clips that go into the door itself any advice would be great

They have both double sided tape and clips. The only way to remove them is to break em off as you pull. I found out when I put on the kenstyle chrome ones.

Those pieces prevent other cars in the mall car-parks from denting your doors so I suggest you do not remove them. Nothing worse than looking along the side of a car and seeing car-park dents. Bondo might make the door look more sleek, but not after a shoppinhg cart or a door bangs up against it. I can see changing them to chrome if that's your thing, but putting bondo on a perfectly good door? not so much.
