Here's the run down: Bought this 93 fastback, happy with it, but compared to my more recently purchased 91 LE, its a slug. I lost to a 90 SOHC, feels like the car wont pull all the way into 6000 rpm. I replaced the cams with a set of 92s, slight improvement (hardly noticable), but I still want more.....Is the 91/92 cam swap supposed to be a really slight difference? I supposed I have the 240/248 setup right now, should I try the 248/238 setup and see if that does the trick? Any other possibilities/suggestions for improvement?

PS - both my cars now have j30 LSDs, my 91 drifts/spins on command, but the 93 seems like its more stubborn. I just want them both around the same level of performance....

If you have any questions/additional info needed, just post. Thanks all!

The problem lies in the fact that its a hatch instead of a coupe

so you see, its a loser by default....

sorry but noone else seems to care to answer you either :)

yeah, I figured that out! I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, suspension's playing a key part in this....The 91 seems like it has a stiffer setup.

Um, your 91 is a hatch too correct? Suspension and handling should be the same. Sell em both and buy a coupe, more rigid and lighter, not to mention a million times better looking

I like the coupes, but no one out here is willing to trade for them.....plus I dont wanna have to swap the LSDs. I'm happy with the fastback's looks too though, I guess I just need power....

Fastbacks are the Pwnage..

S13 coupes are the poor excuse for a Rwd 2dr stanza..

Rated R.. what condition is your motor in?.. Compression wise.. and your timing.

ive had both a hatch and a coupe now... used to like one more than the other. all i have to say is... better have a 91+ bumper on it if its a hatch... and it better be a pignose if its a coupe. otherwise, itll look funky imo. rounder front bumper with rounder back... squarer bumper with squarer back :D

coupe to fastback... hands down i give it to the fastback...altho the coupe has my respect... i like the aggressive look to the fast back... and not the 2dr. stanze look to the coupe... by the way... my cousin actually messed his timing up drifting... maybe that was just by coincidence... but that was his experience...

Yeah, I would question if your engine is in proper tune?Clogged cat? Fuel filter?

I have a fastback now, but I prefer the coupes looks!

.... coupe vs convertible I would agree with you on the rigidity, but both the fast back and coupe have pillars running down the rear.. how is it not as rigid??

RatedR - I have a 93 fast back as well.. my performance SUCKS when its warm outside its so horrible.. when it cools down a little (like 4 or 5pm) I think its pretty fast.. Ive got an N1 dual, k&n air filter, 2ndary butterfly valves removed and a kevlar clutch.. when it hits like 3k rpm it goes der uber fast

.. my closet door just opened and the cat walked out..

Anyways, sometimes I wonder if there is something wrong with my car; sometimes i can mash the gas pedal down and it doesnt seem responsive.. other times u hit the gas and the more gas u give it the faster it goes..

(obviously its going to go no matter what; but sometimes I can can floor it and it just doesnt seem like its performing good)

I think I need to do a rebuild and that will help.. I've got oil leaks and what not =/

Drive the other one and spend ur spare time rebuilding the 93s engine :)

good post fuzion, that's exactly what I'm trying to describe....where u from in Cali? Let me know if we can meet, see if there's any info we can swap about.... I already made the decision to rebuild the 93, I kinda have a deadline (August) as the wife drives it and her school kicks back on then. I did the 248/248 exhaust setup and I got good response, but now the timings way off and its constantly misfiring.

Right now, the thing barely starts, struggles/stumbles when its on idle and heats up faster than stock (I mean burning hot engine bay in a couple of mins). I'm trying to reset the timing and everything, but I'm not really sure how to tune it that well.

When I set the crank pulley to the TDC mark and set the the distributor to cylinder #1, the timing is WAY OFF after I start it and look with the timing light. I'm really tryin to take my time here so if anyone can walk me through a good process of tuning the engine, that'd be good.....HHMMNMM (I'll repost this in another thread, KA forum i guess?)

Might wanna post to online mechanic.. nistech is awesome

Check your fan clutch for the heating issue.. mine had an issue w/ overheating.. i finally took out the thermostat and have been running without it since, ive been driving it for a year or so w/o a thermostat and in the last few months decided to screw with it again.. turns out it was a bad fan clutch; which I had replaced but it made no difference .. it was a crappy kragen fan, thats probably why

Anywho, I bought a fan clutch off a fellow nico member and i think its ready to have the thermostat put back in.. Radiator & all sensors have been replaced.. I think the timing is kind of a beech, when I did the headgasket the car wouldnt start.. got fed up with it and had it towed to nissan, they switched a couple of those little vacuum hoses in the back and flip the dist. rotor 180 degrees.. started up (but still overheated after I paid $90 for a new thermostat)

Im in Sac.. where ru @?

I used to have this same problem with my 93, seemed like a slug, then after running seafoam through it ala Thor's write up, and changing which gas station I go to and going with mobil 1 it started working alot better, and better and right now it just feels like it wants to go go go, I know this doesn't really help, but check the compression on the cylinders, I'm assuming you don't have any CELs going on are there any other mods you have on your car besides the cams?

mine was running cruddy until yesterday when i noticed that my timing was retarded as far as the distributor allows....i set it back to a little advanced past stock and it's running good...

one mystery problem with performance coming and going is the coolant temp sensor may be bad...all should check this little red sensor above and to the right of the throttle body...nissan performance mag has a write up about it, there car was making 110hp at the wheels or so and they tested the sensor and it was sending false reading to the ecu, thus cutting the timing. They then replaced the sensor and hp went back up to 135-140whp iirc....so this may help you guys out some

arent the s14s slower with their newer KA and its meager cams? I dont really like the looks, except the koukis, those are cool. I might actually put that front on my s13.
