I think so!

When the quality of life reaches a point where there is no hope of recovery, or intense pain the government should not in my opinion interfere.

Wow, we agree on something. It should be up to the patient who is terminal whether they want to live or not.

Outstanding!

But where were you when Terri Schiavo was in the news and GWB rushed back to Washington? He managed to spend more time on Terri than he did on the economy.

The idea that the government can prevent you from offing yourself is easily one of the most ridiculous concepts I have come across. It's your life, do what you want, can I have your parking space?

I agree. As far as I'm concerned this state should install a diving board on the Golden Gate Bridge instead of adding all that stuff they do to keep people from jumping off.

I think they just don't want to have to clean up after someone when they're dead...

I'm halfway on this one - committing suicide doesn't just affect you - it affects the people around you and anyone that sees it happen, which can be emotionally scarring, thus requiring people to go to therapy and claim that on their insurance/pay for it out of pocket. Could be quite costly...

My assumption here was "suicide" due to terminal illness, not just cuz your GF gave you herpes and is screwing your dad

WGAF. The only tragic thing i see is teenagers and kids killing themselves. If your over 21, go f***ing nuts.

O/C it should be legal, what a stupid thing to be illegal. Like, 'oh snapz, the copz are here cuz joe killed himself.' Tf? I mean who in their suicidal mind state is going to be like, 'Well i dont know, this is illegal, i better not'. Hell that might even push someone over the edge like.. 'This country is so stupid that they are telling me its a crime to kill myself. Jail my corpse, b****es, im out.'

Pretty much. Just don't take others out with you and keep it clean.

I agree, if somebody is that weak and pathetic taking themselves out saves me the trouble of beating them to death with a connecting rod out of sympathy.

Just legalize it and be done. Then we can select an appropriate age at which people are not worthy to live. You know, like that old movie Logans Run. Kill'em before they need medicare.

How is suicide currently illegal? It's not a crime to attempt suicide as far as I'm aware.

However there are laws banning assisted suicide. You cant help someone else take their life, but if you wanna take your own, there's nothing to stop you. They arrested those people cause they were actively involved the suicide act. I can make a case for supplying someone with a gun or lethal substances, but participating in their death is a crime IMO.

Some states and municipalities have laws on the books that make suicide illegal. It permits law enforcement to interfere with someone caught in an attempt.

As for the terminally ill or terminally braindead, let them rest.

I did a quick google search the other day and came up with nothing to support this, in fact a few sources says that there is no law, federal or in any state, making suicide illegal. Took me by surprise because i had always heard/thought it was.

Anyway the thread was actually about assisted suicide i believe.. At least thats what the source would indicate.
