If you want loudness with no side effect but wasting money I would go with the exhaust.

If you want to ruin your intake tract then go with the K/N filter.

I would keep it stock because only a few J30 with an aftermarket exhaust sound good so search.

I would never publically admit to a Federal Felony violation of the Clean Air Act on the internet- emission tampering. Just because a state doesn't test NOW who knows in future. What if you get caught in another state or by an EPA spot inspection. If you ever sell an emission tampered vehicle you can be made to restore to compliance years after the sale because you committed a fraudulent sale.

What size were you going to make your exhaust? I say don't make it larger than 2.5"s. If you delete the stock cats, replace them with high-flow cats that are CARB/50 state legal. Basically, replace the 2 mid-section mufflers & delete the rear resonator that resembles a muffler.

I think gr8scott can help you with this more than I could. He had a custom exhaust on his J before he sold it.

As far as the K&N filter goes, go with the drop in. The only way you should do a cone filter is if you plan on installing a custom CAI. Besides, HP/torque gains are minimal & you can barely hear the "hiss" of the intake.
