this has been burning inside of me for a few weeks now. i've done a ton of research and i've decided that i'm willing to plasti dip my whole car. it's been done before on quite a few cars now and it looks pretty bad a**. i look at it as a nice temp mod which is removable. it has to be removable since i actually have the car up for sale right now, but it's been up for sale for some time now with little interest so i figure i'm probably still going to have it for a few more months at least. plus it's cheap, $300 for the whole car www.dipyourcar.com

so the question is, even though i'm willing to do it, SHOULD i do it? i know it's a big craze right now, there's tons of people who think it's dumb and makes your car look cheap. for me i think it's a neat temp mod which is completely removable.

and if i do, what color? matte black is pretty nice, but my car's already black so it's not much of a change. i was thinking the 350Z sunset orange, but i'm not sure how it will look in a matte color. they also have gunmetal grey now as an available color and they also do custom colors to an extent.

some examples:

matte black

matte gunmetal (can be light or dark)

Can't wait to see DJ's reply to this lol.

I say go for it man, you'll be the first one to do it. Choose a crazy color tho, something that we never seen on an A/C before!

Haha it's the least durable finish ever! plus there's no way to prevent overspray from getting inside all the door jams and the radiator, engine compartment etc. and you'd never scrub it all off. Plus it looks terrible !

So yeah go ahead and do what you want!

well i would tape off the grill and any openings into the engine bay. it's not just park the car in the driveway and spray away, there is some prep that needs to be done. any overspray can be removed with goo gone (or gasonline from what i've heard)

plasti dip is probably more durable compared to nissan's super cheap paint they used for the altimas. joking aside, it is actually quite durable. if it does ever get ripped or start to peel, i would just respray that panel

Very true I will never buy a red car again after what has happened to mine. I have never seen a full plasti dipped car, it's too hard to tell quality from a pic. I vote no, especially since your trying to sell your car. But if your don't care and are dead set for spraying it my vote goes for Matte army green.

I'm thinking about doing this as well, but $300 is high for a college student :frown:

My vote goes for matte orange with some black accenting. That's never been on an Altima before...I think...

Im not pissed, and Im also not going to try and steer anyone away from this anymore. You guys can do whatever you want, I offer my opinion and you can take it or leave it (isnt that what every single one of these threads is about, "should I?"). Its definitely not for me, I guess I clearly have a different ideal than most in this forum (no offense intended).

I'm with DJ on this, no offense but it looks cheap. It does have one +, you can remove it when you get tired of looking at it.

i'm cool with everyone's opinion, which is why i asked "should I".

the way i see it:
Pros:
-removable
-cheap
-custom colors/matte finish
-easy application
-quick (~5 hours)

Cons:
-can/may look cheap
-overspray might be tough to clean up in door jambs and such

The fact is that i would go for a vinyl wrap if it cost the same, but it's much cheaper. it might end up looking cheap, but it IS cheap. what i'm hoping for, is that even though it doesn't cost much, it ends up looking decent, and form pictures i've seen so far, it can.

i am leaning towards doing it though of course. i was hoping i could get some recommendations for colors, maybe even a 2 tone effect.

Theiranman69, some close up pics when you have some time would be awesome. did you plastidip you car along with a white BMW?

Yea that was my friend and since we did two cars at once we ran out of paint. but since my car's a little smaller it came out a little better. The parts that came out properly look awesome, it's basically the largest parts of the car that aren't completely finished. if you do end up doing it, follow Fonzie at Dipyourcar.com and watch all his full cover videos. i'll see if i can take some close ups soon.

Would it be worth plastidiping your front bumper and edge of the hood as means for a "bra" for when you take long road trips? I think that would be a perfect and ideal substitute for either buying an ugly leather bra or masking your whole front with painters tape.

Ive seen some people take masking tape of the cars and if its in the heat of the sun, it would leave some nasty residue. I I figured if you can plastidip the front end and use that as a protector, then why not? Even in clear coat so its like a clear bra, you can still retain its appearance. I never experienced plastidiping anything other than my tail lights when smoking them, so i dont know how long it would be. But tape would be much cheaper and quicker haha.

I'm on the same boat as you other than that.

i've heard of people dipping thier hoods and front bumpers for road trips. after the trip, just peel it off. looks better than tape, though the tape is probably easier. fashion vs function i guess

Right here bruddah, I dipped my whole front bumper, hood, and side mirrors for a trip to Lake Berryessa. It works, s*** ton of dead bugs and debris was on the dip, I even saw a couple knicks. It works in protecting the paint :dblthumb:

How long did the process take and did you use more than one layer?

I used 4 layers for each of them. It took me about 2ish hours altogether (taping off parts), the dip process was fast. You don't have to use that many layers, but my trip was 4 hours combined plus a very spirited driving up and down the mountains :)
