I've been looking around for a CA motor for the last couple of weeks, and found a place that just got 1 shipped back to them, that they returned cause the Machanic working on the car said the main bearings were out of spec. So now the shop wants to sell the motorset cheap, but with no warrenty. I have pictures of it, and it looks pretty good.

the question is, how hard is it to do the main bearings? do you think a machine shop/engine builder should do it? is it worth the money? I know my way around cars well enough, I just have never done bearings, just head stuff, like cams. the motor is an awesome price at 1250 shipped, but I know that it was just talked about that getting the timing gear off the crank is hard as hell. but do I need to get it off to pull the crank?

oh yeah, I forgot to mention the timing belt and w/p are new, and the timing and valve covers have been painted

Out of spec? What in the hell do they mean it's out of spec? If the main bearings are fooked, then the bottom end is shot. And for $1250, they are on some drugs. External looks mean nothing. Just because it looks clean, judging from what you just posted, it's internally nasty, and not worth the money the are asking. But if you think that motor is awesome at $1250 and in the condition it's in, then you're in trouble and I wish you nothing but the best.

More like his on drugs if he buys it. Go find yourself a local shop that sells motorsets and front clips. A good condition CA front clip should never be above $1500 (unless it has a complete clean front conversion).

the total price was 1250 shipped to my door, He wants 950 for the motorset.

he said the guy plastiguaged the bearing journals, and said they were out specified toloreances.

Well, I went over the FSM to check the bearing clearance #'s, and if what the guy w/ the motor told me. the bearing number are still in spec, they're just a little on the low side.

FSM Main Bearing clearance #'s 0.021 - 0.048

he told me they measured at 0.025, and said 0.030 was average.

so I'm thinking the guy who sent the motor back was an Idiot and I can get a motor w/ all the fixings for cheap.

You should get it. You can also put our name out if you want.

I feel as if we are not trying to screw anyone on this deal! I was going to post this engine in the sponsor area by Monday. It just so happens that Zero260 called me right after I snapped the pictures. I told him exactly what happened with that motor and being that the motor was never even started I think 950 for a complete CA is a good deal.

I've even talked to Float about this motor because he wanted the head but they did not want to seperate the motor that far.

I even told Zero260 today that I feel CAs are starting to become a very "iffy" motor to sell. People tend to forget the fact that they are almost 20 years old.

I'm not trying to save face, I'm just trying to be reasonable.

If the guy plasti-gauged the thing at .025 and said it was out of spec, he's on crack. I'd run that motor just as it is. And for $950, that's not too bad of a price. Finding a trans is going to be a bit of a chore though....

this is where I got my motor from. It was 950 from the dealer.... no kids playing with it before.

you can add a trans for an extra 650
