i lost my 91 DOHC. there is this lady who's selling 90 SOHC with 150k on it, i still haven't driven the car yet. i already know it has 10 hp and 5 torque diffrences. but for the people who have driven both, is it almost the same? feel diffrence? stupid question but will it be easy to get it as the same performance level as the DOHC?MHB

well, it seems each engine has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. drive it and see what you think. id be more worried about whether the maint. would be harder/more expensive, but i hear its actually pretty cheap. and you have a wealth of sohc info in deviouska...

It depends what your plans are. My understanding is that the SOHC is an excellent platform for NA performance. I remember reading a thread a while back about some race team(can't remember their name) making a 200+ horsepower motor from the single cam motor. Devious owns a SOHC and only him and the Almighty know what he is making in numbers but I bet it will make you drool. There are are a lot more aftermarket parts available for the DOHC from my experience. and it seems to be easier to get more power from DOHC with bolt-ons than SOHC(better #'s from the start), but the single cams seem more fun to play with. The dual cam motors are better set for forced induction from what I understand. This is not nearly all conclusive and I'm sure I'm missing lot's of other differences between the potential of both motors, but I think this will get you started. So, like I said it depends.

Iv had both engine's and the twin cam feels noticably faster,And has a higher redline which i like. You will mess the extra 15hp.If you go with sohc.

i see, well i was planning to get that sohc and modify it to reach DOHC strength, i don't think that will be that hard i think. i also have a Bad timed KA24DE motor and a Ka24E motor in my garage so i have plenty of parts. but i was thinking if i can just put some headers on, take my old straight pipe, and maybe intake i wanna rich at least 160 hp and 160+ torque like what my DOHC had. iam not looking for high power. 175hp will satisfy me.its just that i cannot find any DOHC cars around here and iam really desperate to get me another 240, iam driving a 92 prelude now, the more i drive it the more i miss the 240

alot of people hate me here on this forum but dude... im gonna say go sohc ka... but one with lower miles or rebuild that one. i had a dohc in mine and i swapped in the sohc. Much better engine for me...

I love how the compression ratio is on the sohc cuz its easier for turboing on the stock internals.. the sohc ka can handle more abuse.

i feel a better powerband on the sohc than from what i did when i had the dohc.

I would tell ya get that sohc and rebuild it if you need and if you wanna go forged internals.

but on the sohc it'll handle enough psi/hp/torque on the stock intenrals due to low compresson ratio it has.

Just don't go over 300hp or else your screwed for sure, and don't go over 13-14psi on stock internals or else your be screwed again.

oh

i say just get a sohc 240, there not bad engines at all. i just put in a ka-de but i kinda wish i wouldve just found another sohc. did u want it to be n/a or will u go turbo? just a basic low boost turbo setup would get u to the numbers u want.

if i can get up to like 170-180 i would be cool. the KA is already pulling off at the line not bad at all with 155hp. i MIGHT get a turbo setup but for now most likley not, just end up NA. i hope that ladys car is in good shape with that 150k on it, as far as i know it has little rust on the bottom thats it as what i was told. shes only selling it for 400 obo hehe . actually theres this guy whos comin right now to check out my engine layin in the garage, he got a sohc. gonna ask him if he'll let me try it . any more comments or advices will be greatly appreciated!

there are a lot of thing to consider ,when going from dohc to sohc like..the ac lines and compressor are different .. the power steering lines, pump, reservoir are different.. the ecu and harness are different and u will also need to splice the dash harness, unless u get a dash harness from a 89-90 240sx.

i think it would probably be easier and cheaper to fix the dohc u have now or put another dohc into your car..

i have had both sohc and dohc .. imo they fetl close to the same power wise.. i would say the dohc is a little faster..but not much at all ...the exhaust sounds better to me with the dohc . hope this helps

ya the prob is i dont' have tiem for another engine swap. the lady iam supposed to get that sohc from sold it already i was gonna cry. but i found this guy an hr away from me. its an 89 sohc, with 64k on it, he says engine runs good and dependable. only thing i know so far is some rest and a dent on the drivers side, dont' know how big the dent is my friend is sending me pics of it soon i might post em here. but hes selling it for 900 what u guys think.

I have the same prob. I have a 93. Fastback rotting right now, blew it 2 and a half months ago, this guy tried to sell me a 89sohc coupe for 900 and i told him shove it (the trans was gone and there was bad damage to the bumpers, not wreck, more like cut in half with a knife)... anyways now he wants 300... the engine is fine with 90k on it.

I want to get it and will even if i dont use the engine i need new hood/fender/ and some stock interiors.

I don't even care about performance anymore at this point, I just want to be able to appreciate the cockpit of a 240 once again.

The fact of changing out the wiring harness and ecu and power steering blah blah blah should be a big concern, its the only thing holding me back.
