Hey guys I'm going to purchase a G35 Coupe soon and wonder if there's a significant difference between them. I know the Infinity auto transmission is really accurate and shifts fast. But in a race, how badly would the 6speed kill the auto??

I'm going to just daily drive it and not planning on getting anything but an intake and exhaust for performance mods.

Also, I don't plan on racing, if any once in a while.

Do you guys suggest manual or auto??

Reason I ask is because I know theres big difference in RSX and other imports between auto and manual, but not sure about Infinity.

Unless you are putting down major power get the manual transmission.

I'd personally go with a manual if I got a coupe. If it were a sedan i'd end up with an automatic because i'd go with the G35X AWD trim.

If all you are going to use the car for is to race get the 6 speed. I have an AT and I have a lot of fun in mine. I believe the AT has more torque then the MT but the MT has more horsepower. I have had a manual in all of my cars but this one and when I am in traffic i do not miss my clutch at all. The Tiptronic is fun and once you know its timing it makes up a lot on the MT. I have not raced any MTs but with my exhaust and intake I will give one a run for its money.

Depends on how much intown or stop & go you will be doing. This is my first auto and I've really been enjoying not pushing in a clutch!!But, with that said, I still have a 5 speed in the drive.Sounds like you want some justification for getting the auto instead of the manual.......I just don't think you need it. I don't think you will regret it either.

If you are only going to use it as a daily driver...I'd go with the auto. Depending on how heavy the traffic is in your area, you'll save a lot of wear-and-tear on your left leg.

I'm in SoCal and theres no traffic in my city at all. I know auto can be boring and stuff but I also want the car to be fast.

So exactly how much slower is the auto than the 6speed?

What are you talking about? They're fast either way. Manuals offer better performance than automatics. If you can drive stick skillfully you shouldn't have a problem with your car being "slow."

My thoughts exactly. Stop thinking about it so much. It's gonna be your daily driver and you said you're not gonna do much to it. Just get the automatic.

1. Stock G35's are not fast by any means. Unless you are comparing it to a Civic EX or something.

2. Auto's perform better than anyone can shift. They are far more precise than any human can be.

1) I knew you were gonna say something about this. Note I didn't compare it to any other cars. He said he wants it to be fast. To me, he came across as if automatics are the magic ticket to being able to go fast. When I said they're fast either way, I meant that they will still hit 100+ if you use either an auto or manual. And compare it to a Civic EX? Maybe an S2000.

2) I'm fully aware of what automatics can do. However there is a reason why many race car drivers choose manuals over automatics. They offer certain advantages that an automatic just can't give them. Again, what he said came across to me as if all manuals are slow and I was letting him know that they can be fast/capable in the hands of a skilled driver.

Anyways i'm done threadjacking the OP's thread. I'll just leave it at that.

2004 Infiniti G35 Sport Sedan 6.2 14.6 1/4 mile. The S2K runs consistent 14.2-1s. The S2000 outperforms the G

Its really up to you. Do you live in an area with lots of traffic? Do you enjoy driving stick?

If you prefer auto, and you are just considering the auto because you think it will help you race faster, then just go with an auto. Its all up to what you prefer.

Most of the time, its this:

The true enthusiasts prefer manual, and the people who have a car to simply get them from A to B prefer auto. Why?

The true enthusiasts see driving stick as fun, and then enjoy the extra controll over there car that they get.

The people who just need to get places, like autos better, because they dont have to shift, and its a lot easyer, as the computer does everything for them. They also usualy see driving stick more of a pain in the arse, as opposed to being fun.

So again, its up to you, and what you prefer. The "easyness" of an auto, with the option to be "semi-manual" only when you want it, with the tiptronic. Or a full blown manual, where you have the extra controll, and a 6th gear, but dont have the luxury to let the car automaticly shift for you during rush hour traffic.

If it were me, i would go with the 6speed.

I've had manuals all my life, except now got a 03 g35 with auto...there are many advantages to the auto, can drink a cup of coffee without taking hands off wheel to shift...can reach over to that special someone in the passenger seat and no interruptions to shift..etc

I say 6MT all the way. I just got an '07 coupe in stick...it's amazing. It is soooo much fun to drive and i would definatley say manual over auto. I understand though as was mentioned if you drive in a lot of traffic and stuff like that, but look at the bright side...it gives you something to do in traffic it keeps you movin around, you won't bet bored as easliy!

Don't get me wrong guys I didn't justify the auto lol thats y I asked how much faster is the 6MT over the auto.

Anyways, I love stick and wouldn't mind at all. I know an auto can be boring and you have less precise over controls and other aspects of the car. I'm leaning towards auto.

Only reason is many people get auto in luxury cars because they think of the long run I guess.

But I'm only 19 so it should be stick until I become a dad and have to drive a minivan lol!!

"The S2000 outperforms the G".....I Beg to differ with you on this.

I don't know about you but I have raced two brand new S2000, they tried to tag team me on the 241 fwy (toll road in Irvine CA.) and I took both of them all the way to the top of the mountain. One of them even tried to seek up on me when I was paying attention to the first one. I never lost my position on either of them.....I have an AT Custom Exhaust and Injen Intake that is all. This is real time take your eta all you want the fact is I was faster then them.

i believe sketchyrollins summed it up pretty well.

real enthusiasts enjoy the manual shift experience enough that the clutch hassle is always worth it.

plus, as far as i'm aware, there are just some things the auto just can't do.

you can't skip gears for that 5th to 3rd down shift into the corner or skip from second to 5th on the acceleration because you, as the driver, can see that you're headed downhill with nobody behind you and you're not in a hurry, etc.

yes, the computer will always be better at sensing and shifting for you based on "it's programming". it can't sense what you as the driver wants to do, though. it can't see that you really need to grab first and go like hell to get out of the way of that delivery van coming in your lane. it can't see that you want to bog the engine in 5th or pop it into neutral and coast cause you're driving on fumes, etc.

ah... just writing about it makes we want to go out and squeel some rubber on a twisty, turney, stretch of serpentine asphalt.... with my MT of course....

Hey guys I'm reading all this stuff about the 6MT's, but are we forgetting the reason NISSAN bumped the HP in the 6mt's was because the 5at's were faster 0-60. Plus their trannys are more reliable than the sticks. I have replaced manual trannys twice on my 02 3.5 altima, (i know not the same but similar). I researched EXTENSIVELY before i bought the auto, including speaking to shop foremen at nissan and infinity dealerships who all say the same thing, no probs out of the auto's but we do see the manuals coming in for transmission replacements. to me this is backward, i have always purchased sticks in fear of transmission issues. Don't get me wrong i have driven sticks all my life this is my 1st auto, I drove both several times before purchasing and (i might be shot for saying this) but I dont think a stock or similar 6mt can get me off the line. he'd have to shift faster than Mr. Andretti himself
