Since I only have a limited amount of money I have to choose whether to keep working on the 240 or to get a bike. I've always wanted one, all my friends are getting them and I don't want to be left out. I wouldn't completely stop working on the 240 but I definitely wouldn't get my silvia front end and big turbo anytime soon. What should I do? :help

Hmmm. everyone's situation is different, but my feeling is if you really want the bike, and can afford it plus insurance while keeping your 240 running well, then go for it. Bikes can be way fun.

And dangerous. Obvious, but worth pointing out again and again. Look at it this way: Accidents happen to even the safest drivers. Most people are involved in at least one car accident in their lives. The odds of getting into an accident (where you're not at fault) go up on a motorcycle vs. in a car, since you're smaller and harder to see, and the guy on the bike will nearly always be hurt more than the guy in the car. A coworker was killed earlier this year on a bike. 12 years experience riding, just going home to his family, and some idiot changed lanes right into him on the freeway. On a bike you are completely at the mercy of every single cell-phone talking, makeup applying, inexperienced and lazy-assed bad driver around you.

There are 3 dead this year on the local streetbike forums.. a very close-knit group.

I'd advise againt you getting a bike. Your motivations that you've given us with which to base our opinion that you've asked us for... are not the right ones.

Ever go price riding gear? You won't be saving money getting into streetbikes. First you have to buy the bike, then license and insure it, then outfit your body with expensive gear. Then if you still have two pennies to rub together, you can guy gasoline for it. If you buy a used bike, you'll need maintenance. If you buy a new bike, well... if your friends are convincing enough to get you to buy a bike, then no doubt you'll need to mod it with a slip on pipe and ss lines.. etc etc.. stil spending money..

Finish the car and enjoy it. One project at a time.

My buddy had the same question. He has a 94 Z28 and we were going to drop in a 6 speed, a cam, headers, and cat back. Then mabye a s/c. But then he suddenly got the bike bug. He opted for a 1995 Kawasaki 750. So he bought a piece of crap instaed of making his car fast. My stock CA beat him on the highway at 8 psi. My advice: If you're gonna do it, do it right. If you get a nice bike, then cool...you got my respect. If you get a crappy bike just to say that you have a bike, then well, you just suck. ;)

would a 600 honestly be small for a beginning street bike though?

I plan on actually learning to ride by messing around on some dirtbikes first where all I have to worry about are trees and screwing up wheelies in dirt and gravel:D well, falling in the most screwed up positions too though...

The most I've ridden a motorcycle as of right now is an old Honda Shadow 500cc in a backyard and not getting out of first gear.

haha oh wait, this isn't my thread....

I have been debaitng this myself as well. I would just get a few bolt ons for my CA instaed of building it like I am considering. Going to the Honda dealer Friday and sitting on the new RRs sure makes this decesion tough (esp. considering that I found out could afford a '04 600RR)

Well I decided to not get a bike and bought my silvia lights, so I'm kinda committed back to the car again.

I think I was having a bad day so sorry if I snapped at ya. I've only gone to the meet once a long time ago and I don't recall ever seeing your 240 although there were quite a few there. My car had a dented up door then but now has a door with a darker shade red.

Don't buy a bike. It's common sence, you don't have anything around you so if you are in an accident then your body takes the brunt of the force. I know. I was in an accident 6 months ago that almost killed me. I was in an induced coma for one month and in recovery for another month. Thank god I don't have any 'permenant' damage, but I am in an immense amount of pain even with oxycontin. Keanu Reeves and I have matching abdominal scars, and matching damaged spleens - ha.BTW, I was wearing full leathers and a nice helmet (which saved my life). Armor dosn't protect you from blunt trauma it only saves your skin from road rash. It looks like you made the right descision.

Take the saftey class and do the test. Then ta da you have your liscense.

FIRST GET YOUR GEAR. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT RIDE WITHOUT GEAR. hrem... I can't beleave how many motorcycle owners i see with no gear its rediculously stupid.

The avarage life span of a motorcycle driver in AZ is 20 day. Obviously its becuase they DON'T WARE GEAR.

Do not buy leather that crap is cheap and won't protect you worth ****.

i got my bike not because of peer pressure, but i was a cheap bastich & it was cheaper than a car d/t maintenance, insurance, and the gas mileage was waaaaaaaay betta than a car...

then was outta the loop for a while since i went to nyc to live for a few years; didn't wanna compete in the streets w/ taxicabs & the worst drivers i've seen... so bike in garage.

came back to sjersey to resurrect my bike to save more gas/insurance $ but now haveta upgrade my gear as well to provide me more protection from the growing #s of SUVs/big TITAN trucks/ & whatnot... my ole' topgrain cowhide leather jacket won't cut it anymore :tank: see this: http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....72896

that's in the backburner till i can afford both vehicles (& body armor) on the road again...

A properly ridden (highway and in-town), new, assuming proper and safe break-in period small twin such as the oh-so-perfect Suzuki SV650s will average 38mpg, according to my coworker's stats. He can ride extra carefully and ease into the 40's, but a screaming 4cyl at 13,500 rpm will not 38mpg get.

kevlar > leather ??modern protective gear uses both. This aint the hell's angels era.

You don't buy riding leathers at Wilsons, bro. The cruiser crowd get's their faux-gear at leather shops, but they're too old to know better and those shops are the traditional Harley fad fashion store. Not much of an eye on safety, or else these brain bucket style novelty helmets would cease to exist. Instead of dying away, this novelty non-dot gear market thrives! and it's all junk.

Chaps don't count as leathers. Modern suits / jackets consist of synthetics and / or leather with several hardened impact/severe abrasion zones such as elbows, shoulders, etc.. kevlar, foam, extra padding and perforated leather ventilation is the future.

Where the modern sportbike rider will wear a perforated jacket in summer, leather or Joe Rocket style synthetics both with reinforced and hardened impact and abrasion protection.. the Harley guys just remove layers to beat the heat. Nobody said they were smart...

As everyone knows, I always weigh in on these bike threads, because I have been there and done that. And I have the scars to prove it.

Motorcycles are very fun, and very dangerous. But there are things you can do to protect yourself as I am sure others have mentioned. (I didn't read all the other post).

1. Buy and wear good gear. Wear it each and every time you get on that bike, even if it is to go down to the local gas station for a cold drink.

2. Take a rider safety course.

3. Ride like you got some sense. Don't act like an ***, or it will put you on yours. It did me, more than once.

I loved riding, and miss it alot. Especially on nice days. But it was not worth it for me. Be safe, have fun.
