im going to be getting an sr powered 240. my question is should i buy a used one and then put then engine in myself or buy one with an sr already in it? the cost would be a lot less to purchase one with the motor in it already. what do you guys think?

well it's all a matter of preference. do you want to trust somebody elses work and check over it all? or do you just want to do the swap yourself for satisfaction purposes?

plus, most ppl that go for SR20DET engines go for power. either racing or drifting....in japan it comes stock in a lot of silvias so the owners may or may not have driven it hard, but if its already been put in a 240 u can be pretty sure the owner wanted all that power and probably pushed his engine pretty hard

Yeah, if your going to buy a 240SX with an SR already, you really better know your stuff when you take it on test-drives and look at the install. It can cost a lot if things were not installed properly or low quality parts were used. And if it is running bad (for example it overheats *easily*, its running super rich, burning something) then just skip it since diagnosing and fixing a problem that someone couldn’t fix by themselves is an added cost on top of the price of the car itself.

Its not a horrible idea, thats how I got my SR.

I'm agreeing with the guys on what they had to say, but one important thing is that most cars these days no matter if it's N/A or forced inducted has been driven to death. At least you know you're buying a 240 with an sr20 that already runs and does not have any major problems. I've heard and seen some guys do the sr swap into their 240 and never complete it because they got a bad motor from a bad source and don't have any warranty on the motor. Some do it blindly and think if you can do it then they can do it. If you know you have the money, knowledge, and ambition to do the sr swap yourself then by golly do it.

i would buy a used 24o and drop the motor in myself, partly for self satisfaction, i enjoy doing these types of htings, and also, you know waht grade of work was done, it makes for a lot of p0ker nite stories

I had the same problem and currently am looking for a car with a sr allready installed for a couple of reasons:

First it is cheeper. You never see a car ad that says "$15k invested, $15K firm." Cars are a loosing proposition. I figure I will throw the money I will save into performance upgrades.

Second, I live in an appartment. I would love to do the swap myself and would perfer to do it that way but I have no where to do it. If I did I would have to take up some space at my parents house and I just dont want to go though the trouple. If I had my own house with a garage I would do the swap myself.

Take the sr 240 to a shop to have it checked out. If the person thats selling the car has a problem with having it looked at or you have a funny feeling about the car, walk away. Having a car looked at by a mechanic is a good way to get the price to come down on a car, if you make a note of all the repairs it needs.

Not everyone builds their 240 to blast down the road. I built mine for show and recognition/repsect. When I goto a show or find people hanging out, I always get a sweet reaction. I dont have the best driving record so I usually watch what I do. One day i might take it to the track, but will probably sell it first.

At least I have the balZ to back it up! Why must someone always make a negative comment. I am proud of what I built. I would rather have people appreciate a sweet looking car than the police to be towing it away from racing.

I don't care if you're all show and no go, but how can the police tow it? If you're street racing yes, but why go to all that trouble street racing with a hefty investment? Why not just go to the drag strip and do it legally and still be all show?

Hence my own words "One day i might take it to the track, but will probably sell it first." Everyones future is unstable, you might have a great day then another maybe not. I may sell it first, I may goto the track. You might blow up your car, you might wreck it, or you might live happily ever after.

One thing I know is there is always someone in the world who feels better at others expence.

You have your car I have mine, sorry I have the money and freedom to do what I want in life for me not you.

Is this website for bashing others cars or for people to come and get knowledge or share ideas? I am undecided.................
