Hi,

So I got an SES light in my 2001 pathfinder. Car seemed to be running fine, no problems at all, but I need to get it smogged so have to fix it.

I also have the seat locking problem, and another mechanic told me I had to go to the dealer to get it fixed. So, I take my car to the dealer, and heres where things get crazy.

They tell me that the SES light is because of two error codes, P1145 and P0171. They then tell me that these are two sensors.

Then I am informed that the first sensor costs $295, and $250 labor. The second sensor is (I'm not joking) $650, and will cost $200 labor. The seat kit is $350, and will cost $400 to install.

A total of $2145!!

Being a suspicious guy, I googled the parts, and found them for $65, $109 and $250. In parts alone that saved me about $850!

On top of this, I became so annoyed they were trying to bend me over like that, I bought a OBD-II sensor for $60 at Autozone, and when I tested it it didnt even pull up the P0171 code!!! The one with a 700% markup!

Is this just how it goes? Should I report them?

I hope they go out of business real soon.

Either buy the parts and do it yourself or buy the parts and take it to a small reliable shop and have them do it for you.

They're usually much cheaper then a dealerships.

Most shops will install the parts you bring them, but they won't warranty them. Also, if there is a problem with one, they can't do anything about it since they didn't buy the part and they would have to buy the correct one so you will get stuck with two new parts.

Dealers should not be the first choice in replacement parts unless you can't get them any where else. If dealers had lower prices, people might use them more often, but I guess they didn't get that memo in business class.

Ironic how more expensive pieces have more expensive labor.

the 171 is a System too lean (bank 1) and the 145 is O2 sensor slow response (bank 1 sensor 3).

And you wonder why people pay big bucks for extended warranties.

Good luck.
