when i got home after taking the car for a ride(runnning great) idle was at 800 rpm.......i then shut off the car................unplugged tps........started car......idle is now 1300 rpm...........checked timing.....way ahead.........plugged tps back in...........idle dropped to 800 rpm.........checked timing and was 20 degrees..............it seems like the idle has a lot to do with what reading i get.........

Itll work but supposedly according to the fsm it won't be 100% accurate. Probably not enough to make hardly any noticable difference in drivability honestly. In regards to idle, the manual says unplug the tps, get idle to 700rpm, then adjust timing, then plug it back in. Im not sure why it jumps around 1000rpm... thats a lot, but it probably has something to do with going in and out of 'timing set mode' (unplugging and re-plugging in the tps)

only thing i can think of is verify #1 top dead center with a long screwdriver down in the plug hole in comparison to the pics in that link i mentioned. that'll at least let you confirm weather the chain jumped a tooth or not. I feel it is very unlikely that it has jumped.

Do you know anyone else with an SR? Can you borrow their cam angle sensor?

If you want to take it to a garage, dig up all the right factory settings for the motor and any reputable mechanic should be able to diagnose it. just 'cuz its an SR doesn't mean its different than any other motor... they just may make you sign a waiver saying theyre not responsible for it.

I like to help but its late so im going to bed. Let us know how the tinkering goes.

yeah i highly doubt it jumped a tooth.........ya the idle jumps bigtime whenever i unplug the TPS........i think im just gonna try setting the timing with the tps plugged in and see what happens..........i think ill try what that link says also......but first ill set the timing with the tps plugged in..........it might not be accurate but at least it will be safe? im gonna do it tomorrow tho because its getting late(11:30)......ill set the timing with the tps plugged in and let you know what happened and how it runs................thanks neil...ill get back to you tomorrow

You have to put the car in timing mode to unplug the TPS to set the timing.Or else you will never get the idle down to 800rpm with the TPS unpluged...You can only set the timing right if your idle is below 1000rpm's.

ok i figured out my problem....DO NOT TAKE A READING CLAMPING TO THE CENTER WIRE OF THE COIL PACK...................................this morning i set the timing to 15 degrees while clamped at the middle wire............went for a drive and had 0 power.............i was beginning to get very frustrated.....i came back home and rtead a few old posts....1 guy said to clamp to a black loop wire near the firewall.......so i did.... took a reading and got something completely different.............it was set at the 1st tick.....no wonder it had no power......so then i set it to 15 degrees...went for a drive and i got my power back......whoever said clamp it to that midle wire off the wire pack is wrong....thats what ****ed me up the whole time...............

I haf a very hard time trying to get tthe idle to 850 with TPS unplugged........sometimes when i turn the idle screw it will drop and sometimes it wont......i think its stuck or something.....sometimes i will turn it 5 times and the idle stays the same........sometimes the idle changes....i guess ill do some searching on how to fix that..........once i get that fixed....i will go back and fine tune the timing.....at least now i know not to clamp onto that center wire off the 1st coil pack..........

Yea i was the one who mentioned that, and that the The only time i ever heard of this procedure the dude couldnt get it to work right. Then someone else said clamp the sensor around all 3 wires...

Glad to hear its trying to come around tho. I cant believe i didnt remember to mention flicking the throttle 3 times.

neil i was finally able to drop the idle with tps unplugged.....i just piched that hose going into the iacv and the idle dropped and stayed low after i let go of the hose...........adjusted timing to 15 degrees.....and car is running sweet now.......also while i was fiddling around with the throttle i found a fair size hole in my intercooler.....i guess a bolt was supposed to be there...but there was no bolt....so i plugged that up...lol.....anyways thank you for your help...appreciate it
