I'm buying a used 2005 Infiniti G35x Sedan with 90k miles on it. It's been through the full inspection at an Infiniti dealer very recently. The dealer is offering a 3yr/42,000 mile warrantee for $1900.

Worth it? Thanks for the help!

Welcome to NICO! :wavey:

Purchasing a warranty for your Infiniti G35x is a great investment, however the price that your dealership is quoting you is far too expensive for that length of coverage. Please try contacting Courtney at Infiniti of Scottsdale, a NICO sponsor, as she will most likely be able to beat your quoted warranty price by quite a bit. Here's her contact information:

Best of luck. Let us know the result! :)

Welcome to Nico!
It depends....It depends on how much maintenance history do you have. It depends on how much you work on your on car.
I did buy a 3 yr extended warranty on my 04 Coupe that I bought used.
The car looked great, but I only had a little history. I do work on my own cars, but still wanted an extended warranty just in case....
I got my extended warranty at my local Nissan Dealership. It was around $1,100.
I would suggest going to Nissan to get a quote near the end of the month.
I did use it to have the seat motor assembly replaced and the AC compressor replaced.

No, really, Courtney would have been able to beat the price you got too SVTCOBRA. She works miracles with her calculator.

ERIC, I should have said that I get 'special pricing'....
So, I wouldn't be so sure.

However, I'll give her a call about our 08 sedan when I get a moment just to check her prices. I'm always into getting a better deal!!! :yesnod

I am no fan of warranties but I did purchase one on mine from the dealer where I purchased my G and paid around $1900. They billed me monthly for a year with no interest. I put on roughly 2k miles/month
I believe I only had one covered repair during the extended warranty period for replacing the clutch slave cylinder and clutch fluid for a sticky clutch pedal at 92k miles in July 2009.
I sort of felt it wasn't worth the money until back in March of this year when I had a repeating flashing air bag light that indicates the air bag will not deploy in case of an accident.
I had almost 137k miles and was out of warranty. The air bag module had previously been replaced under warranty and a recall item for the air bag had also been previously been done under warranty.
After the dealer tested and inspected my G I was informed that the flow chart indicated a replacement of the entire wiring harness was required and the cost of the replacement parts and labor was $2200.00

Image

Because I had purchased the extended warranty from this dealer I argued successfully with the service manager and Infiniti customer service that the cost should be split 3 ways since this was a repeating problem and took a long time to pin down on the wiring harness.
Since the harness replacement no more flashing air bag light.
Others have mentioned about perhaps getting a cheaper price from another dealer but I have to wonder how I would have made out had a purchased a warranty elsewhere?

Good luck with your decision

+1 on Courtney. If you're not a possum-hunting buddy of the dealer like SVTCobra, she's got the best pricing you can find on Infiniti Elite warranties AND maintenance plans.

I`m not sure if this is ok to post here.... Pls. delete if not... This quote was from Courtney for 2008 EX35 AWD Journey .

The quote goes up more if it`s beyond 50K miles...
EX35 w/ +40k miles (available terms and price will change once you exceed
> 50k).

Thank you for the information AWGD8 but, unfortunately, it would be of little use to anyone other than yourself. Specific warranty prices with Infiniti are calculated on individual circumstances such as, but not restricted to: vehicle total mileage, mileage/year estimation, model, year, prior ownership, prior service claims, and incident history reports. Thus, your quotes would serve use and be specific to only your vehicle and will vary in possibly substantial degree to others'.

AWGD8,
That does look like some good numbers! (Depending on the coverage).
Like I said, I had gone with the 36/36 due to lack of maintenance and history knowledge of the used car. Thought that was a good safety net.
My price was in that same ball park, but was 3 yrs ago....Mileage was 44K at the time.
Tried to call Courtney the other day, but she was out.
Will call again when I get time.

I have never purchased a warranty, and in nearly 20 years of owning cars, would have never gotten my money out of one. I have probably saved over $10K by declining warranties, and have spent MAYBE $2K fixing items that would have been covered. Warranties are nothing more than any other insurance policy, and insurance companies stay in business because they take in more premium than they pay out in claims. So statistically, over your lifetime, you will invariably pay more in warranty premium than you will benefit from covered repairs.

I say skip it, unless you truly believe that the car will require more than $2000 of repairs in the next 40,000 miles. And frankly, if you do have that premonition, you may want to consider a different car.

I could have saved a lot more than that by not carrying automobile insurance based on my claims for the past 40 years of driving. That doesn't mean I shouldn't carry insurance. The warranty can be looked at similarly. The odds of spending more than the warranty cost on repairs may be low, but it protects you from the chance of having something very expensive like the auto trans going "boom". Each one of use has to assess his/her own risk tolerance.

Good arguments both ways! Personally, I like the idea of having a warranty on the expensive items (powertrain). However, some of the other things that can go wrong can also be expensive. To each his own.

Agreed, it is about risk tolerance and piece of mind, but its also about value. I see the value in paying a few hundred bucks a year to insure my $40K car, but I don't deem it necessary to pay a couple thousand dollars to insure against a couple thousand dollars of potential repairs. I would simply self insure for repairs. Invest that couple thousand bucks instead, pay repairs out of pocket if something goes wrong and keep your coin if it doesn't. I guarantee that putting warranty premium in your own account will net you more over your lifetime than constantly giving it away to these warranties.
