Well... I wouldn't put too much stock in anything "any" dealer tells you. Go to a Toyota or Nissan dealer and tell them you are considering a Honda and they'll probably tell you all kinds of bad things about it. None of it true... but they need to down play the competition.
Like you... I never owned anything but Hondas and Toyotas. Never had any of them let me down... now I'm spoiled expecting any car I might buy to be as reliable.
I had already made my mind up I wanted a smaller, fuel efficient SUV. My immediate and my "only" considerations were the 2009 Honda CRV, the 2009 Toyota Rav4, or the 2009 Subaru Forester. While there were others early on in the selection process (like the Hyundai Santa Fe) I crossed them off the list due to size and/or fuel economy. I then made "multiple" dealership visits and test drives in the CRV, Rav4, and Forrester.
The 4 cylinder CRV couldn't get out of its own way. The lack of power killed the CRV for me. The 4 cylinder Rav4 had a little more power than the CRV... but not by much. I really liked the performance of the 6 cylinder Rav 4 but the price tag was tough to swallow... "and"... I held out till 2009 hoping that Toyota would have dropped the swinging tailgate. No luck. So, the Forester was in the lead. It had plenty of pep... I loved the HUGE sunroof... but I wasn't in love with the body styling. Too boxy. And again more than I really wanted to pay.
However, back and forth I went between the three, but couldn't decide because none of them knocked my socks off. Then one day my wife and I were at the supermarket and we parked next to a Nissan Rogue. We had never seen a Rogue, and I had never ever considered a Nissan product. Never owned one and knew very little about them. But we sure like the way the Rogue looked. So the following weekend we figure what the heck, lets go give one a test drive.
We were both amazed. Regardless of what the Honda dealer told you we both felt it drove and handled like a sedan. I was also the quietest of all the small SUV's I had been driving. Easy to get in and out of. Great fuel economy. And (probably the most beneficial) you got a lot more car for the money. I loaded up the Rogue (everything but leather) The same configuration in the others I had tested put them all 3 to 4 thousand dollars more. I spent the next couple weeks researching Nissan forums, etc and discovered there are die-hard Nissan fans who swear by their reliability and have owned almost all Nissan product exclusively. (Like the way I feel about Honda and Toyota). NET: I now own a Rogue SL and I love it!
FYI... As to the Bose sound system. Obviously you could put in an after market system for less money that might sound better... but the Bose is part of the Premium Package. If you want the Smart Key, lighted vanity mirrors, Bluetooth etc... the Bose comes with it. Anyway... give the Rogue a test drive... and if you find yourself leaning towards purchasing one, give the Bose system a test drive as well. Personally I have no problems with it. It doesn't blow my dress up... but its more than adequate for what I need.
