Hey I'm new here and new to the world of cars sort of, lately I've really thought about selling my 02 Saab 9-3SE and buying a Nissan 240sx s13 or s14. I'm really just curious about this communities opinion. I hope to use the car as a way to learn how to work on cars and make it a good drift car. One of my only situations is I'm 17 and going to college next year, I won't be able to work on or add mods to it to much plus it would become my daily drive as well What are your guys opinions on me doing this?

As long as you are good with maintenance (as with any car), the 240SX is a fantastic car for daily use. They are very durable and get decent MPG. I drove my first S13 for a few years before doing much to it. Even after my SR swap, I still drove it every day with no issues. But asoomal is right, any car will consume your wallet if you let it.

I bought mine in college. It will serve you well when kept in good condition. If you're looking to mod the car- start slow while you're in school- don't attempt things that could potentially put it out of commission if you aren't sure about what you're doing. They can be very fun stock anyway.

My suggestion would be to buy a car that you love and don't buy one that you see others have and you simply want to have it.
If you love it, you wouldn't feel bad spending a few dollars on it and wouldn't mind keeping it until the wheels fall off.

I have seen too many good cars ruined because people thought that they would like it and in the end destroy it and simply move on to another car.

Most, if not all of the people here LOVE their 240.

As said before, maintain a car and it will maintain you.
Also, listen to it. It WILL tell you when something is going bad / wrong.

Build and learn slow. Typical start is Intake, header, exhaust. Then suspension.

Good luck with what ever car you choose.

I agree. I own a 3G eclipse which for the most part is a sporty looking shell with a midsize sedan chasis, but I loved the look and wanted to build a nice sleeper.

I purchased my first 240 (1990 Coupe) my freshman year of college. The only thing I did to it was lowering springs and exhaust. I kept up with normal oil changes and maintenance and took her from 120k to well over 200k in those 5 years commuting back and forth. I even had a couple spring break trips thrown in. Only actual parts I had to replace were the fuel pump, new clutch, and a bad injector.

So yes, they can be very reliable, great DD cars. However they are even older now and finding an unmolested one might be tough. When I got mine, it was only 11 years old.

Do it!!! I've had mine since 07 when I was a senior in hs. Very fun car, plus the ladies love them. I always wanted one to fix up but it was this car that taught me about cars. Fairly simple to work on. They can set you back on cash but if you love it the reward is great. My love has grown even more for these cars over time, preferably s13s. If anything happens to it I'll definitely buy another. I plan to have a fleet one day. Good luck on your search.

Don't buy one if:

1) You plan on putting a V8 in it.
2) You plan on getting some fake wheels (XXR,Rota,Varrstoen)
3) You say hooning instead of drifting.

The s-chassis scene has enough of those already...
my work here is done. :inoutgay:

If you don't plan on doing a lot to it, you could get a S14 98 that is in good condition with less miles. Getting a S13 now days are somewhat going to be molested. If you do find a clean one, get ready for the drift tax.
