Have a 1999 I-30 and when I disconnect the positive battery lead the car stalls out. Is that normal?

I've kinda seen it go both ways. Some cars will do it, some will keep running. What is prompting this question? Is your battery light on?

I know with a bad alternator it will die even on cars that typically do keep running.
